So this is kinda awkward and i need outside opinions last spring this skinny black and white cat started hanging around my duplex.
  • 03
no collar, no tag, super skittish. he kept sleeping under my porch and crying at night.

at first i just left water out bc it was getting hot. after like 2 weeks i started putting food out too bc he was clearly not doing great.
  • 06
i asked my immediate neighbors if anyone owned him. nobody claimed him. i posted in our small neighborhood fb group.
  • 07
nothing. after about a month he basically decided my porch was home. he'd wait by my door every evening.
  • 08
one night it stormed really bad and he was soaked and shaking so i brought him inside.
  • 09
i told myself it was temporary until i found the owner. i took him to get scanned.
  • 10
no chip. he wasn't neutered. vet said he had fleas and was a little underweight but otherwise healthy.
  • 11
i paid to get him fixed, shots, flea treatment, etc. wasn't cheap but at that point i was attached.
  • 12
that was 8 months ago. he's fully indoors now. he sleeps on my pillow, follows me into the bathroom, the whole thing.

if i close a door he cries. he's definitely bonded. last week a woman who lives a few houses down knocked on my door.
  • 15
she asked if i "had her cat." described him perfectly. i told her the situation. she said yeah he's hers, she's had him since he was a kitten, but he's "an outdoor cat" and sometimes disappears for long stretches.
  • 16
i asked how long he'd been gone and she said "since early summer but he does that." i told her he wasn't neutered, had no chip, and was underweight when i found him.
  • 17
she said she doesn't believe in neutering male cats bc it's "cruel" and she doesn't chip animals bc it's "not natural." she wants him back and says i had no right to take him to the vet or fix him.
  • 18
she said i basically stole him. i told her i'm not giving him back. i said if u let ur cat roam for months with no collar, no chip, not fixed, and he ends up living somewhere else... that's kinda on u.

now a couple neighbors are saying i'm wrong and that technically if she got him first he's hers.
  • 20
one even said i should "share" him and let him go outside during the day so he can visit her.
  • 21
i don't trust that. if he goes out she could just keep him inside and say he came home.
  • 22
and honestly he seems way happier and safer indoors. i did try to find the owner.
  • 23
i spent money. he's attached to me and i'm attached to him. but i guess technically he was hers first.
  • 24
Am i wrong for refusing to give him back?
  • 25
pollyquinn check laws in your state. in my state i have to look for the owner for 2 weeks and if nobody claimed them i was able to keep her and thats how I ended up with my dogaughter
  • 26
Various-Benefit5274 Original Poster's Reply That's basically what i did. searched, posted, waited. i didn't just keep him out of nowhere. laws might actually support me, which is reassuring, but more than that he's literally bonded to me now.

creatively_inclined She neglected him and didn't look for him for 8 months. He wandered off because he wasn't being fed or loved. Please keep him.

KombuchaBot Cat distribution system working correctly. YNW, she neglected that cat.
  • 29
Ambitious-Writer-825 Not wrong. 8 months to start looking when you were there the whole time, she is no longer the owner, you are.
  • 30
JaneAndJonDoe It's your cat now. You have vet records on the cat in your name. You originally attempted to find the owner before claiming the cat. She has zero claim to the cat. She doesn't deserve a pet. It's absolutely cruel to NOT fix your cats and to

SamuelVimes Trained I would really like to see the court case. Former owner: yeah, i let (cat) roam for months, didn\t care for him but he's an outdoor cat, came back at least once a year. OP: (cat) has been hanging around my place since (8 months ago) malnourished, flea riddled and non chipped. Here is vet bill, vet report of health, and documentation from my Ring with dates (basically a boatload of supporting evidence). Former owner: OP stole (cat) I want cat back.. How would this "lady" prove

Natural_Ordinary8103 Early summer is not a quick oops he slipped out moment. that's a whole season. if she really cared she would've chipped him at bare minimum. u stepped up when he needed someone. that counts.
  • 33
JaneAndJonDoe It's over. It's been 8 months. This is one of the reasons why it's important to establish a vet record immediately. Congratulations on your dogaughter!
  • 34
EternalGuardian84 Get your cat microchipped. Do NOT let him outside ever again. You spent money, have the vet records and actually cared for him. He's yours now.

derp-birb Congrats on adopting a cat! She is exactly the type of person that should not have a cat. She neglected that cat and wanted him there only when it was convenient for her. She doesn't want to spend the money or time on him that she needs to. Those types of owners are just lazy and don't have their pets' wellbeing in mind.
