'I did try to find the owner': "Stray" cat purrfectly bonds with his new rescuer, 8 months later neighbor demands they return her outdoor cat and they refuse her to her face

Letting "your cat" roam around for 8 months isn't something that's forgivable. It's abandonment.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again 1,000 more times until everyone in the entire world gets it: if you're going to allow your cats to roam freely outside, you have a duty to sterilize them and microchip them. Otherwise, you're just part of the problem that so many of us try so hard to fix. You're allowing your cat to contribute to feline homelessness, and you're putting them in danger. Is that purrfectly clear?

Also, if you have no way of identifying the cat as yours, you can't get upset when it falls in love with someone else, they fall in love back, and they decide to keep them. That's exactly what happened with our adorable tuxedo cat below. A humble purrson found the skinny black and white cat and took them inside. They formed an emeowtional bond and they decided to keep her. Then, 8 months later, a neighbor knocked on their door and demanded "their" cat back. They said what any normal purrson would, which was no.

If nothing ties you back to that cat, not a vet bill or a microchip, that cat is not yours. You're feeding a street cat that you've claimed ownership to, but as we can see here, that cat is free to make its own choices. And it has. With its heroic hooman rescuer who took them inside and showed them what real love was.

When we were younger, we had an indoor/outdoor cat. It wasn't our choice, but that was what we grew up with. But even still, that cat was fixed, got regular checkups at the vet, and had a collar with our contact information on it. We saw her every morning, every evening, and all day on the weekends. If we could go back and change things, we definitely would, but we were kids and our parents made the rules.

This rescuer saved this cat. They showed them safety, comfort, security, and what a true pawrent looks like. So, of course they're bonded to each other. That cat was being used by its past “owner” for their amusement, not because they truly cared about the cat.
