Ah yes, the sacred Hour of Chaos. When the household is asleep and your cat suddenly remembers they are, in fact, a finely tuned predator.
Cats are crepuscular, meaning they’re naturally most active at dawn and dusk. In the wild, those twilight hours are prime hunting time. Your apartment at 3 AM? Close enough. If your cat has spent the day conserving energy (i.e., napping in 14 different locations), that stored fuel has to go somewhere. Enter: zoomies. These sudden bursts of frenetic running are often just energy release, practice hunting behavior, or a response to random stimulation like a sound, a shadow, or an invisible ghost that only they perceive. Young cats especially have intense play drives that mimic stalking and chasing prey. Add nighttime quiet - when subtle noises are easier to detect - and you’ve got the perfect storm.
They’re not trying to ruin your sleep. They’re rehearsing survival skills… dramatically… across your face.

If your cat acts like treats are a constitutional right, it’s because reinforcement works frighteningly well. Cats are excellent at pattern recognition. If meowing near the cabinet once resulted in delicious crunchy nuggets, congratulations - you’ve created a behavioral loop. Food is a powerful motivator, and treats are usually more calorie-dense and aromatic than regular kibble, making them especially appealing to a scent-driven animal. Many treats are high in protein or fat, which cats are biologically wired to seek out.
On top of that, asking works. When a behavior (paw tap, dramatic stare, tiny scream) gets rewarded, it strengthens. That’s basic operant conditioning, and your cat is very good at it. There’s also the social component: food exchanges can reinforce bonding. In the wild, successful hunts are rewarding. In your kitchen, the treat bag is the hunt. So when they demand snacks hourly, it’s not greed. It’s learning, instinct, and a deep belief that you absolutely have more in there.
