There is a well-documented phenomenon in many households known as the “I don’t want a dog” dad. At first, this dad will firmly state that a dog is too much responsibility, too messy, and absolutely not happening. Then the dog arrives… and within approximately three weeks the same dad is building elaborate nicknames, sharing snacks under the table, and insisting the dog needs a special blanket.
While this transformation feels like a comedy trope, it actually makes sense from a behavioral standpoint. Dogs are extremely good at forming social bonds with humans because they evolved alongside us for thousands of years. They naturally read human body language, respond to tone of voice, and form attachment patterns similar to those seen between humans and family members. Once a dog starts greeting someone enthusiastically every day, following them around the house, and seeking comfort from them, the brain releases bonding hormones like oxytocin. Before long, the formerly skeptical dad has become the dog’s favorite human - and is absolutely pretending this was the plan all along.

As unbelievable as it sounds, some dogs really do get braces on their teeth - and the result is both medically helpful and unexpectedly adorable. Veterinary dentists sometimes use orthodontic devices to correct severe bite problems that could otherwise cause pain or difficulty eating. Dogs can develop issues such as overbites, underbites, or misaligned teeth that dig into the gums or the roof of the mouth. In those cases, braces or other dental appliances can gently guide teeth into a healthier position.
Unlike human orthodontics, the goal isn’t cosmetic perfection - dogs couldn’t care less about straight smiles - but rather preventing injury and improving comfort. Because dogs’ bones and teeth move relatively quickly, these treatments often don’t last very long compared to human braces. And yes, the sight of a dog with tiny metal brackets can be incredibly cute, even though the procedure itself is carefully managed by veterinary professionals. It’s one of those rare moments where advanced dental science and pure puppy charm accidentally collide.
