  • Can I get fired for refusing to work 60+ hours a week?

So last year I was promised a promotion/raise if I helped clean up the mess from the last person.
  • I worked 60 hours a week and increased productivity by almost 3X. In January I was told the raise was given to someone else... later found out it was a brother in law of a director.
  • I had about 4 years of experience on them and didn't get the job. Fast forward to now I have had 2 separate conversations about my performance and how I am behind.

  • I refuse to work over 40 hours now or weekends. My manager told me if people didn't think I was capable of doing the job they will find someone who can.
  • Can I get let go for working only 40 hours a week? Will it look bad for future jobs if I get fired?
  • Should I quit or keep working my 40 hours until I get let go and get unemployment while looking for work?

  • Eton Rd If you're a salaried worker, you can get let go for any reason as long as it's not an illegal reason. And that would include not being willing to put in the extra hours that they want. If you're working at a decent size company they will likely have you go through a PIP before firing you so it's unlikely you would be fired without seeing it coming. If you get fired, when you fill out job applications in the future, a lot of of them are going to ask if you've ever been fired. Have you dis
  • 4Runnnn Original Poster's Reply Yes she said I was lucky to have a job and that they expect a certain level of professionalism at the job. I get no lie about 250 or so emails a day, I have 4-5 meetings minimum and have other things to do. I have told them I need support and they do not care
  • CoatAlternative1771 Depending on what state you work in, you can get fired for sneezing weird. Start applying to new jobs. This is a toxic job.
  • Skeggy- Yes. The lack of employment contract sounds like you're an at will employee. Nepotism is also legal. Always continue working while seeking new employment when possible to keep income flowing.
  • PizzaProper7634 Never quit until you have a new job locked down.
  • tuvar_hiede Kick back and watch it burn. Don't sabotage it because that will bite you. Just work your wage and remind them you worked hard to fix things with a promise that never materialized. Remind them they can replace you yes, but market wages plus training a noob. makes it hurt.
  • Dull-Contact120 Start looking now.
  • Nightstick11 If you live in the US then yes you can definitely be booted for that. Don't ever frame it as "I'm only working 40 hours per week and no more." You can do what you're doing but message it in a way that would engender more sympathy should neutral third-party decisionmakers such as a jury or an arbitrator have to make a decision on your situation.
  • SourDoughBo If it's salary then 40 hours means nothing
  • Aggravating-Switch99 Time to bounce from that freak show, but find something else first.
  • hakuna matataKC As a salaried worker, you broke the rule. If you push yourself really hard to impress, you've established what you're capable of. As soon as you reduce back down, now it's a performance issue. When in reality, you were overworked from the start. It's twisted.
