Sometimes, we forget that in toxic relationships, the cats go through it too.

Adopting a cat with your partner can sound like such a great idea to untrained ears, but to us, it sounds more like trouble than anything else. We are all for adopting cats, we want to make sure that is clear, but adopting cats together… that is something that, in our opinion, should be reserved for very well-established relationships. Because it is all fun and games until a breakup happens and a custody battle over the cat ensues.

Both partners in the relationship bond with the cats. Sometimes, it's a clear choice who the cat will go to after a breakup, but other times, it is not. Sometimes, people talk about splitting up bonded pairs of cats after breakups. Sometimes, people use cats as a card in a breakup, trying to get the cat from the other person to cause them pain. But no matter what it is, the first victim of the whole situation is, of course, the cat. And that is why we hate it. When the relationship is toxic, the cat suffers too, and it is important to remember that and then to act accordingly.

We think that people often don't think about how difficult these relationships are for the pets as well. The humans go through so much, that is true, and we would never diminish that. But the cats go through a lot as well. They really are like our kids in some ways. Cats don't like watching us fight or seeing us unhappy either. They know when things are wrong. And although we are so happy that you were able to get out from under that man when you did, we are even happier now that they are out from under him as well.

The fact that your cat was so happy to see you right away - that he clearly missed you so, so much, and was waiting for you to get him back - that is the most heartbreaking and heartwarming part of the whole thing for us. We are so happy that they are out of there now. It sounds, by the way that you describe the girlfriend asking you to come, that the cats were never wanted there, not by her and not by him. They are where they are supposed to be now, with you.
