Upstairs neighbors allow their new dog to play throughout the night, keeping downstairs neighbor awake, internet helps them form a strongly worded letter: 'So we can all live peacefully!'

  • My upstairs neighbor got a dog around a month ago and I have not had a full nights rest since. Someone is up with the dog until around 11pm and then someone else gets up for work around 3:30am and they let the dog chase its
  • ball around the entire time. I work full time and go to school full time, so at night. is quite literally the only time I have to sleep. I have since developed a constant eye twitch which my doctor contributes to lack of sleep. And for
  • anyone thinking "file a complaint with the landlord" I told the landlord and they said they don't. get involved with "tenant disputes" which is bulls in my opinion but I'm not in a position right now to move somewhere
  • else. I live in upstate NY and we have gotten a ton of snow this year so when this has happened, I just banged on the ceiling. Our apartment is on a hill so my entrance is at the
  • bottom of the hill on one side and their entrance is on top of the hill on the other side. Meaning, to go and knock on their door I would have to walk up hill in about 2 feet of snow in the middle of the night to ask them to control their
  • dog. So instead I banged on the ceiling to which they replied by stomping. Not off to a great start, but it seems like something they should understand.
  • So anyways, can anyone please give me advice on this note on what I could add/ take away?

  • I am writing to ask you to please keep the noise level down late at night/ early in the morning. As you may or may not know, my bedroom is directly below your living room, so when the dog is running around it sounds like I live under a
  • bowling alley. I have not gotten a full nights rest since you got the dog and it is starting to affect me physically and mentally. Usually I would have come up and asked politely when the noise was occurring, but given the
  • late hours and the snow outside, I resorted to banging on the ceiling and I do apologize for that. I understand we are all trying to live our lives here, and I try to be as considerate a neighbor as possible, so I am asking
  • the same in return. Please abide by the quiet hours listed in our lease so we can all live peacefully.
  • That is a very nicely written letter. Also send a copy of it to your landlord. Also, why won't your landlord require their tenants to follow the quiet hours listed in the signed lease?
  • I worked nights for many years. Wear some soft earplugs, it's really not that bad. I would also suggest finding a place where there are no upstairs neighbors or you Google CH-
  • on the top floor. You can't really make a dog "learn" to be quiet, short of keeping it locked in a cage all the time.
  • Mention the physical effects. The eye twitch, the lack of sleep. It makes it personal, not just an annoyance
  • Can you move your bedroom? Sleep is more important than where a room is. So see if you can get sleep in your living room.
  • How about just getting some earbuds like these https://us.loopearplu gs.com/products/dre am or a noise machine.
  • What doctor do you have that you were able to develop an eye twitch AND got an appointment within a month!?
  • It is my understanding that landlords have to follow the law of "quiet Enjoyment." Get indoor security cameras that record everything and send your landlord an
  • email about "quiet Enjoyment" (look it up) and send audio clips of the noise. If it comes down to it you can refuse to pay rent if he doesn't fix the problem.
