Canadian stuck in Mexico saves street dog on his last legs from heat and neglect in heartfelt gesture of kindness, resulting in the canine’s adoption into man’s family: ‘His name is Sylvester and my girlfriend is going to freak when I show up with him.’

All it takes to save a pupper is for one person to see them. And in this story that person came at the very last moment before it was too late.

This world is a rough one, and survival of the fittest is unfortunately not confined to the animal kingdom. It is seen on our streets amongst the doggos and cats who are left to fend for themselves after they have been abandoned. Leaving them at a distinct disadvantage due to having never lived outdoors and not knowing the ways of the streets. And while it might seem obvious that something has to be done to help animals in such sad situations, most people will simply pass on by and ignore the reality unfolding before them.

But in this story one man saw this doggo who needed help and not for a moment, but stopped everything to help. From that brave move only good came, as the doggo began its rehabilitation journey and eventually became a beloved member of this hooman's family.

  • Dang, that is one heck of a sorry state to discover a dog in. We cannot imagine what it must feel like to come upon a pupper in such poor condition but it must be utterly heartwrenching. Thankfully, this kind rescuer did not just see a sad situation, but an opportunity to help and save this dog’s life, heck maybe even make it a better one. This is the kind of attitude we need more of in this world. An unknown amount of people passed by this pupper before this guy, and no one stopped. It should not be such a strange thing to stop for an animal in need.

    the looks of it, there was a dirty styrofoam takeout container half full of gross water when I got there this evening, and some fly-covered dirty piles of dog food. Not ideal, but at least one other human cares.

    I refilled the styrofoam container with fresh water and tore the beef jerky up into tiny little pieces and fed it to him. He was barely able to move his face close enough to eat it. But he ate every little speck, and drank most of the water I left.

    Oh, wow. This blew up. Just refreshed Reddit and Wow. I went to get him this morning about 630am. I thought he was dod when I got there. He hadn't moved since I left him last night. But when I walked up he opened his eyes, saw me and started wagging his tail and lifted his head up.

  • Wow, this is so heartwarming. Just that little bit of kindness in the form of some jerky and water made such a lasting impression on this pupper. To be fair, if we were in a similar situation getting ignored constantly, we would also be delighted by the kindness of a stranger like this. But it is truly lucky that this pupper made it through the night in his condition and will now be on his way to a full recovery and a wholesome home life with a family who will love him forever and never left him live the life he had once suffered through.

    So I scooped him up and put him in the front seat of the car to take him to the vet. Little dude didn't even fight me. He was shaking at first, probably his first time in a car, but it didn't last long. He had his head in my lap after that for the drive to the vet and he just stared at me the whole time.     He didn't even flinch during that or when they took blod. They had to try 3 times because his veins kept collapsing. I think he might just be too weak to react, but what a little trooper. They are keeping him at the vet overnight to get him on fluids and to try and get him stable and hopefully bring down the fever. They are going to call me this afternoon with an update and I will go visit him then.

    I was worried about affording the overnight vet stay, but they only charge 17 pesos an hour (less than a dollar), so that's pretty awesome. Since I am in the Holiday Inn for the next 2 weeks and can't have him here, I am going to stay at a friend's airbnb with him until my work contract is over. We will hide out there until the 29th, and then I will be driving across Mexico to San Luis Potosí to stay with my girlfriend until mid September, and from there I will drive back to Canada with him.
