Since we're 10 memes in, and there are 10 more down there, let's take a break with 10 genuinely interesting chicken facts:
] Chickens can recognize over 100 faces. They can distinguish between different humans and other chickens, and even remember them for long. If you raise chickens, they know who you are.
] They have complex social hierarchies, making the phrase “pecking order” literal. Chickens form structured societies with rankings, alliances, and even social politics.
] Chickens are descendants of dinosaurs. They’re the closest living relatives of theropods like Velociraptors.
] They communicate with 30+ different vocalizations. Different sounds mean different things: food discovery, danger from above, danger from the ground, calling chicks, complaining, etc.
] Mother hens talk to chicks before they hatch. Hens cluck to eggs, much like we talk to pregnant women's bellies. This helps them bond before birth.
] Chickens dream when they sleep. They experience REM sleep just like humans, which means they likely dream. Tiny dinosaur dreams from the past.
] They can feel empathy. Studies show hens become stressed when their chicks are distressed - a sign of emotional empathy.
] Chickens can run surprisingly fast. They can reach speeds of about 9 mph (14 km/h). Not bad for a bird shaped like an 18th-century parlor leg rest.
] They use the sun to navigate. Chickens have excellent internal clocks and can orient themselves using sunlight.
] Egg color depends on chicken breed - not their nutrition. White, brown, blue, green… it’s all genetics. For example, some chickens even lay pastel blue eggs.
Bonus meme-worthy fact: Chickens sometimes purr when they’re happy. It's a soft trilling sound when they're relaxed and content.
