  • Am I overreacting? First job blues!

I(23F) just got off my first ever shift at my first proper retail job at a local uniform supply store.
  • It was mainly training today and super slow, but I was fine with it bc | was getting paid anyways, and I was complimented the entire day about how good my work ethic was, how smart I was, how fast I picked things up etc.
  • Then suddenly like 2 hrs from my shift ending at 6, at about 4:20 my manager came up to me and said, "were slow right now I'm cutting you at 5 instead of 6." I asked, "Okay.
  • Is there any chance I could work till 6 anyways for the money and do some stuff around the store for you?" Apparently, this was horrible and argumentative.
  • She screamed at me for about 10 minutes about being disrespectful and arguing with her and then yelled at me more for starting to cry and told me to either come back on Friday or don't if I can't handle people raising their voices at me.
  • I thought I was showing initiative and a willingness to work! How was I meant to know I was being disrespectful by asking to work more hours??
  • Is this common in other retail positions?? Reason I've never gotten a job prior to this is due to never having enough experience, so I get either no interviews, or tossed from an interview at even the most basic retail jobs.
  • This is the first job in years to even give me a chance. My only other experience was volunteering a little during the summer in middle school at a local mom & pop owned animal supply store.

  • Certain-Forever-1474 Unfortunately, many work places operate like this, even though it's completely unethical. Hang in there and remember- you are there for your own gain, so don't go quitting over their inadequacies. They'll probably always be this. way, you don't have to buy into it.
  • Alert_Monitor_9145 From this vantage point, I think both side carry some "blame", for lack of a better word. You being cut early because the work left to do didn't warrant the pay for the company to keep you on for those hours. They weren't being nice and offering up an early day if you'd like it, they were making a business decision. You were essentially questioning their judgement. Now, if the lady yelled at you for 10 minutes, then that is over the top. Seriously, though, did she yell for 10
  • NerdyGlitch Original Poster's Reply I figure it was about 10 minutes bc I entered the room she was in at about 4:20 (I checked my phone briefly), and by the time she was done and I'd grabbed my stuff and left the building it was about 4:38- 4:40 ish but I could not be accounting for me grabbing my stuff and walking to the exit But you are right I don't think I should take it to HR over this little thing, and I need to grow a bit of a thicker skin I'm sadly very thin skinned...
  • Sonoran RoadRunner I don't think we've heard the whole story.
  • NerdyGlitch Original Poster's Reply Sorry to tell you but that's basically it, just cut during a slow day and apparently its ride to ask to work more after you've been cut I'm taking this as a learning experience
  • mbroda-SB If you're getting "tossed from interviews" as you stated and are getting screamed at for asking to work the last hour of your shift, there is A LOT you are not telling us but what's going on.
  • NerdyGlitch Original Poster's Reply There's really not, I'm mainly tossed from interviews because I have no experience, but I'm not sure how they expect me to get experience if nobody will hire me. From what I've heard that's a pretty common experience though with getting a job now-adays. As for the rest, I assume she was just having a bad day and took it out on me for 'questioning' her authority, and asking to basically do nothing and get paid for it with how slow we were.
  • Used Negotiation8227 Take it as a learning experience, but why did you start crying that part is confusing.
  • NerdyGlitch Original Poster's Reply I'm sadly a really sensitive person, and am easily triggered by being screamed or yelled at, it's very embarrassing but sadly something I struggle holding in.
  • westermann28 Yeah that's not normal. Go back to work on Friday, but keep applying to other jobs. It's easier to find a new job when you're already employed. You're going to have to toughen up to deal with this current situation, but know in the meantime that you're not wrong in wanting to leave a toxic work place.
  • missannthrope67 You weren't being disrespectful. She's a psycho that thinks she can treat others like sh because she pays them. Talk to your coworkers about it. And remember, no one can make you feel anything without your permission. Good luck.
