Am I overreacting? First job blues!

When I worked at my first job, I was a cashier at a retail store, and the boss refused to let me sit on a chair during my 8-hour shifts. He claimed that even if there are no customers to serve, I should keep myself busy and never, ever, sit down to rest. Since that was my first job and I was a clueless 19-year-old who was afraid of confrontation, I accepted my fate and got rid of the stool behind the counter, but now I am able to recognize this behavior as the actual red flag that it was.
Was the behavior of this manager justified? Is it okay to yell at a new employee for asking to work longer shifts?
Some would say that the manager crossed a line and should not have raised her voice at the new employee for simply asking to keep her original shift, while others would claim that the new hire should not have questioned her new boss's decision.
All in all, it is the 23-year-old's decision whether or not she should keep working for a manager who thinks it's appropriate to yell when someone says something she does not approve of…
