  • AITJ for "holding hostage" a famous local musician’s album because he refuses to pay my full rate?

Im a freelance audio engineer. I mostly work with indie bands, but a few months ago, i got contacted by a pretty well known musician in our city (let's call him "The Artist").
  • He's known for being eccentric, which i now realize is just code for being a j *.
  • He hired me to edit, mix, and master an 8 track EP for his new project.
  • We agreed on a flat rate for the whole project, with 25% paid upfront. I have spent the last 6 weeks living in my studio.
  • Im talking 12hour days, fixing out of tune vocals, and basically re drumming half the tracks because their session drummer was hitting like a wet noodle.
  • Man sitting in a recording studio, working on audio production at a mixing console while looking focused.
  • Last week, i sent him the final low-res watermarked previews. He messaged me back saying he loves the vib" but then dropped a bombshell.
  • He said that since he gave me the opportunity to have his name on my portfolio, that should count as part of the payment.
  • He told me he's only paying half of the remaining balance. I told him absolutely not.
  • My rent is not paid in clout. He started texting me, calling me unprofessional and saying Im stifling his art.
  • He even had his manager call me to say that if I dont release the high-res masters now, they'll tell every band in the scene to boycott my studio.
  • Man working in a recording studio, adjusting audio equipment while focused on the mixing console and screens.
  • I have not replied. I just moved all his project files to an external drive and told him he gets nothing until the final invoice is cleared.
  • Now, his fans are posting cryptic stuff on instagram about greedy gatekeepers in the industry, and im starting to feel like the bad guy.
  • I have put so much work into this, but now im wondering if I should just give in so I dont lose my reputation.
  • AITJ for holding onto the files? TL;DR: A well-known musician wants me to take "clout" instead of money for 6weeks of mixing and mastering work.
  • Im refusing to send the final files until he pays the full price, and now he's trying to blackball me in the local music scene.
  • Impossible-Use4950 Don't let this little sh get away with theft. Name and shame.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Im so tempted to but he has way more money for lawyers than i do. plus i dont want to get banned for doxxing or whatever. but man, its really hard to stay quiet when he's lying about me.
  • lydocia You're waiting for payment before you deliver a project. That's not holding hostage, that's normal business.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Right? I did not think it was this complicated. You pay, you get the music. Its so exhausting having his manager call me "unprofessional" just for wanting the money we agreed on.
  • ironicmirror As long as you have that agreement in writing, you'll win in court.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply I definitely have everything saved. Texts, emails, and the original invoice. Its just so annoying that it even has to get to this point. I'd rather just be paid than deal with a legal headache, but Im ready if he keeps pushing.
  • edwardniekirk Call the manger back and ask if you filing in court and telling the world that he is a broke de d beat that wont pay his bills be better press than just paying his bills.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Im so close to doing this. i have all the texts and the original contract saved. they think they have power because of their "name," but being known as a deadbeat who does not pay their staff is a career ki er. thanks for the reality check.
  • 1stJensterGeek NTJ but you do need to respond. Send an invoice. If it goes unpaid, take him to small claims. Watch the online stuff because that might spiral fast. If you dont have them already, buy a few cameras for home and work. Fans can get...well...fanatical. You might need to remind him that doxing and libel are both criminal offenses.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Thanks for the heads up about the cameras. I honestly did not think his fans would go this far but im starting to see some creepy comments on my studio page and its actually making me nervous. I have already sent a formal invoice via email, just waiting to see if he actually pays or keeps acting out. Definitely looking at some security options today.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Lol seriously. he really thinks he's some business genius but he's just being a cheapskate. im definitely sticking to my guns though, no pay no files.
  • One-Alternative4705 Honestly? Let him talk. If he tries to blackball u, show everyone the receipts. Nothing kills a "famous" musicians career faster than being outed as a cheapskate who screws over working-class people. He's the one who should be worried about his reputation, not u. Totally not the j !
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply I really needed to hear this. i was starting to get worried that people would actually believe him. i have every single text saved where he agreed to the price, so im ready if he tries to take it further. i just cant believe he thinks "clout" pays for studio gear lol.
  • martiantheory Hold your ground. Don't accept anything short of full payment Let the album collect dust.
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Honestly, thats the plan. Its just hard because he's actually trying to ruin my name in the local scene right now. But you are right, if he wants the music, he knows the price. Clout does not pay my bills lol.
  • Potential-Refuse-689 Not the j at all. Please do NOT give in. If u give him the files now, you will never see that money. He's bu ying u because he thinks he has power over u. Stand ur ground. Your work has value, and fixing "wet noodle" drumming sounds like it deserves a bonus, let alone the full rate!
  • Consistent-Zone3445 Original Poster's Reply Lol "wet noodle" is the perfect way to describe it. it was honestly a nightmare to fix. thanks for the support, i really needed to hear this because i was starting to feel like i was being too harsh. but yeah, no pay, no files.
  • BookltPizzaChampion I would have a lawyer draw up a letter that outlines the terms and conditions of your contract, the remaining balance due, that date it's due by, and the consequences of not settling the debt. Those consequences will include not releasing the music, going to court to recoup the balance, and drafting a factual social media post to counter the threat of him ruining your business' credibility. You can then ask your lawyer if there is any recourse for the online. harassment and i
