'Everyone lost': Indoor ginger cat escapes the house, tries to fight a skunk, loses and returns stinky, upset with his owners for letting this happen and having to face the bath of shame

Whenever we think about our indoor-outdoor cats making friends outside, we think of other cats. Trying to make friends with skunks is generally a bad idea for everyone involved. 

People say that cats are not friendly creatures. They're aloof, they don't care, they just want their space and our food. But as people write about cats for a living, we can tell you that this is not true at all. Cats make great friends with other creatures. Of course, cats bond with us, but they bond with other animals as well. Cats bond with dogs, despite their differences. Cats bond with birds, despite them being natural enemies in the wild. Cats make friends with pigs. 

Circumstance matters. Generally, cats make friends with animals or people who are around them for a long enough time. But other cats, especially cats who run outdoors as well, sometimes try to make friends with… creatures who are not interested. This orange kitty - the owners say that he got into a fight with the skunk, but who knows? He's orange. He might have just been trying to make friends.

    Got back from a hockey game and our entire house reeked of skunk. Figured out it was this guy. he was not happy getting a bath.

    Eyes and lungs were burning from the stench. 12 hours later our bedroom is still stinky but better. Going to have to do another bath. used the 3% peroxide, baking soda mix and seemed to work pretty well.

  • You think that he would learn a lesson after this, but we agree with you - he won't learn anything. In fact, we think he might start running out even more than usual. He has an enemy now. He must have revenge for what was done to him. He will find that skunk again, and he will try to win that fight yet again, and chances are, considering the fact that he is orange and that, no, he will not learn his lesson, that he will lose the fight with the skunk once again.

  • It really does amaze us, the way that cats blame us for basically every single problem that they ever have in their lives. They will be scratching our couch, destroying our property, yet if their itty bitty sensitive nail gets stuck in said couch, they will yell at us to save them from what happened to them, as if we were the ones who got them into that conundrum in the first place.

    apatheticriot OP Ya he is an indoor cat. He is also an inherited cat who spent the first 2 years of his life outside. So turning him into an indoor cat was 6 months of absolutely p ed orange chaos everyday. He still yearns for his younger years of freedom and succeeds in getting out about once a year. He is fast and sneaky. Usually when you open the door with hands full of groceries he darts between your legs.

  • Ah, you can take an outdoor cat indoors, but you can never fully take the outdoors out of that cat. Now, it explains why he's constantly trying to run out, despite the fact that he has every comfort he could ever want at home. Not just because he's a curious orange, but because he's an ex-outdoor orange.
