Pawrent adopts “unwanted” shelter cat who struggles in her toxic family's home, then watches him completely transform after they move out: 'It makes me cry happy tears'

Contrary to popular belief, cats are very sensitive creatures, especially when it comes to negative emotions. They might not understand your arguments, but they understand the energy surrounding them.

Cats are more purrceptive than we give them credit for. A lot of people think cats don't care because they act aloof sometimes, but we're convinced that they're doing that on purrpose. We think they actually understand hooman language, but they just choose to ignore us anyway. That's the most cat thing a cat can do. But, even if they don't understand most of the words we speak, they do understand one thing quite clearly - negative emotions.

If you're in a bad situation, your cat is probably going to be the first one to pick up on it. This is why we always trust our cat's intuition of people, they seem to have a sixth sense for safety. They won't stand on their hind legs and start waving their paws in the air, miming "Danger, danger!", but they will start acting out in other ways to communicate that they are uncomfortable with the tension in the environment. Like, going numbers 1 and 2 outside of the litter box, obsessively itching, etc.

The good news is that these problems are easily fixable - find a way to make the environment more pawsitive and calm. For our pawrent below, that meant moving out of her toxic family's household in order to live alone with her cat, and she was ameowzed by how he quickly he transformed after moving out. He's happy, she's happy, and we're happy for them. Read through their purrfect ending below!

Just like how some cats transform after getting adopted, they go through a similar meowtamorphosis when moving from a toxic environment to a healthy one. Being more playful, chirping, and establishing a routine are all signs of a healthy cat, and we couldn't be happier for both of them to start this new chapter of their lives together.

Trouble's story

"This is my boi Trouble. He used to be sooo nervous about anything, would never greet guests, would constantly hide at noises or guests visiting.
I was living with my ex when I got him and, looking back, my relationship was pretty toxic (not in an obvious way) my ex was also fairly neurotic and everything made him anxious and miserable.
Since we've split up, Trubbs is the happiest most chill boy. He only hides when maintenance guys come in, but otherwise he greets people, and walks around like he owns the place (he pretty much does anyways).
Cats definitely pick up on and are affected by vibes. (Edited to add: maybe particularly orange ones :))"
