Customer tries to report cashier because they didn't make conversation while 20 customers were in line

  • Upset customer tattles on worker who didn't meet her expectations.
  • Customer came back for my full name, just to report me because I wasn't making conversation with them

I used to work at a store in a heavy tourist area, so I was already used to the chaos, people from all over the world, and customers asking a million questions at once while you're just trying to keep things moving.
  • One day I'm on register, line is stupid long, and I'm in full efficiency mode, scanning items fast, getting people in and out, doing exactly what I'm supposed to do.
  • Apparently... that was a problem. This customer gets visibly annoyed that I'm not making small talk or "entertaining" them while ringing them up.
  • I wasn't r de, didn't ignore them, just wasn't going out of my way to have a full conversation while there's a whole line behind them.
  • I finish ringing this customer up, hand them their receipt, and they straight up it out of my hand and walk off clearly annoyed.
  • I'm thinking "okay... weird, but whatever." As customer starts heading out the door they comeback bolting towards me demanding my full name, I stupidly gave it away because I knew where this was going and I was curious to know if I'd finally get fired or not.
  • Maybe 10 minutes later someone in corporate or up the chain idk who tf, got the complaint from the customer and were mad at me because "Cashier was being r de and disrespectful" Like... my bad for prioritizing getting 20 people through the line instead of giving you my life story???
  • Retail really got people thinking cashiers are there to be performers on demand If I wanted to entertain ppl for a living I would be a circus clown right now
  • Busy cashier works at her retail job.
  • People have experienced this first-hand

Worldly_Step_49... The hyper-familiarity some customers expect is wild (it's on par with being parasocial). I find this happens a lot where I work, simply because it's a mom and pop place in a small town; they think because they "know" the owners. (most of them only do in a surface-level way), they know the employees, too.
  • You did nothing wrong and certainly shouldn't have been chewed out by corporate for doing your job efficiently. They really need. to stop soothing customers and their fragile egos.
  • It's weird, too, because it's not like the employee ACTUALLY cares about you at the end of the day

DrStumbleDog Ime off so much that customers expect us to entertain them. I dont mind making a bit of small talk, especially if its not busy but I hate they expect you to be their personal host/entertainer.
  • Deliberately interrupting me when I'm clearly busy with a task just to talk about the weather. FFS Kevin, you don't need to spend every waking moment talking, learn to be okay with silence now and again.
  • Emotional-Job10... No winning, because surprise if you do make small talk, the. The next person in line complains about you for making small talk and not being faster like make up your fr king minds!
  • Sjksprocket I one time had a customer complain because I talked to them about the weather and it ruined their day because it was cloudy out.
