Frugal 34-year-old refuses to pay for a $11k luxury senior facility for his parents, protecting his future by setting financial boundaries: ‘They are choosing a lifestyle above what their finances support’

Growing old is expensive. 

This young only child realized the weight of his parents' expenses when they started shopping around for senior living facilities. Flabbergasted when they presented him with an $11k/month option, he did his own research and found that their top choice was one of the most expensive senior homes in the country, boasting an address in one of the top 2% wealthiest neighborhoods in Canada. 

Were his parents a part of this elite financial group of Canadian elders? Not exactly. 

Sure, they could afford a nice place on their own, but instead, they demanded their only son commit to subsidizing the rest of their lives in a luxury senior home. While it's understandable that they want to spend their final years in comfort, there's a big difference between comfort and opulence. 

Essentially, these parents were expecting their son, an only child, to take on an enormous, continuous financial burden for at least the next decade. This would not only affect his career, his lifestyle, and his future relationships, but could. likely to sabotage his entire future. Selfishly, the parents didn't see it that way and tried to pressure him to cave, but he wouldn't. 

He couldn't afford it. They couldn't afford it. And that should have been the end of it, but instead, they kept pushing, trying to find ways to make it work for everyone. 

Luckily, for these parents, they raised a man with a good head on his shoulders. He not only refused to subsidize their housing but also agreed to help them find something more within their means. He didn't want to abandon them; he simply wanted to help them find something that was a better fit for their lifestyle and their wallets. Graciously, this young man made a wise decision that protected his own financial future and put his parents' best interests in mind. 

Because after spending even a moment looking at senior living brochures, it's easy to see how aging parents could be coerced into living above their means. Wrapped up in a shiny, perfect package, everyone growing older wants to feel like they have the luxury life at their fingertips, but a lavish life doesn't always mean a lavish price tag. 

If you look hard enough, a frugal person can always find a good deal on a great life; this guy's parents just needed to learn to compromise their tastes in exchange for real happiness.
