Anteaters look so weird. It's like someone built an animal out of spare parts. But when you dog deeper you learn that every weird bit is made to do one job: eating ants and termites.
Their long and narrow snout with their tiny mouth lets them reach deep into tight tunnels. They don’t need big jaws because they don’t chew.They have no teeth! Ants are soft and squeeshy. Instead they swallow them whole and grind them in the stomach. And that extremely long and sticky tongue? It can flick in and out about 150 times per minute, which is basically a living tape measure for scooping insects.
But their mouth area is not the only weird thing about them. Anteaters also have massive curved claws, which are perfect for ripping open termite mounds (and also strong enough to defend against predators). Despite looking fluffy, they have tough skin and fur - that helps protecting them against bites from angry insects.
Anteaters are actually smart hunters - they don’t destroy a nest completely, just open it, eat quickly, and go. That way the ant colony recovers and becomes a renewable food source. It’s weirdly sustainable. But ants don’t provide tons of calories, so anteaters have a slow metabolism and a kind of shambling, energy-saving walk.
So yeah, they look weird, but it’s the kind of weird you get when evolution says: “Your entire job is ants. Optimize everything for ants.”
