Management lay off employee, expect him to train coworker taking his place: 'They are putting him in a position to fail'

If a company doesn't need an employee anymore, why are they telling someone else to do the exact same job?

Almost everybody in the workforce would do well to remember that they are considered replaceable. Company loyalty usually only extends as far as you can be useful to them, and if that stops, your working days are numbered. It is no wonder that so many employees job hop these days.

What makes this arrangement confusing, though, is that some workplaces get rid of perfectly decent employees when their job is still a necessary part of how the business functions. It may be that they feel the need to do layoffs for economic reasons, but it is rarely a sound economic decision to fire workers who do something that they are always going to need. This is one of the frustrations that laid off employees face.

To add insult to injury, those who are due to leave their jobs can sometimes be given extra responsibility before they clock out for the last time. Working to make sure the employer who kicked you out the door doesn't go under can feel like a major insult, but it is easy to feel obligated to do it when there are multiple factors to consider.
