bourgeoisie_bird Cat genetics are very cool if you ever want to go on a deep dive

johnnnyswitchblade Business in the front, party in the back!! WHAT?

SimonpetOG Now THAT looks like a legit chimera! My guess is shorthaired gray mackerel tabby & longhaired cinnamon or ginger ticked tabby. What a funky looking kitty.

Gilword There was a stray in our neighborhood that we called the "piecemeal cat" because it looked like it was assembled from parts of many cats. Perhaps this is its cousin.
  • 11
j_chats_ we actually have a neighborhood cat with a very similar pattern

beeikea REAL LIFE FOR REAL CHIMERA !!!!!

a majority of the cats claimed to be chimeras in popular internet spaces are absolutely not. they are simply tricolors with interesting/unique patterns, usually a split face, maybe heterochromia too. even venus (attached) most likely is not a chimera and in my opinion. absolutely should not be claimed as such without genetic testing.
  • 16
    VENUS
  • 17
but THIS is absolutely a chimera -- it's genetically impossible for a cat to be a shorthair black tabby and a longhair rusty tabby without it.
  • 18
    Distinct_Tea_970 Frankenstein's kitty.

rememberpianocat Does it have a home? Because if its feral it may just be an underfed long hair cat that could be sick. Otherwise no I've never seen a cat like that.
  • 20
jupitermoonflow Yeah I've seen on long hairs that are strays and malnourished. Could also have something to do with the seasons. But I bet if she was better cared for then her long hair would come back.

TallEnough Jones That's a centaur but the human part is a cat and the horse part is a different cat

By far the craziest example of this I ever saw. This was in Naha, Okinawa in Japan maybe around 2010 or 2011. Many of the black cats I saw on the island had weird, mangy patches of orange undercoat that grew longer than their regular fur during the windy,
  • 25
winter months, but this one (female I think) was off the charts. I live in Thailand now and most of the black or grey cats here grow a brown undercoat too and though it mostly stays under the top coat, in the right light they look completely and unambiguously brown.
  • 26
TinyBitsREAL Not as cool but still pretty cool: our local feral is brown but his head is black which leaks down his back as a single stripe. It even goes down the middle of his tail too.
  • 27
I love seeing so many different cat fur patterns, especially when they're as drastic as your cat's OP
