Woman talks with friend, showing him the messages between her and her roommate.

Ready for the messages?

Wow, look how excited both of them are

A month ago, they seemed super excited still...

And now, as this woman puts it, she is stuck in a "horrible horrible position"
At this point, the roommate/former friend must know what she's done. For whatever reason, she has backtracked so hard and is probably just avoiding accountability.

I can't wait for another update from this person, because this story is so bonkers.
I also hope this woman can enjoy her solo road trip! Although it's not what she planned on, solo travel can be a lovely time. You'll meet lots of new people, and though you have to be a little extra cautious, you'll find that a lot of locals get very excited to show you around their town.
The money aspect is such a shame, too. I think that's probably why the friend is trying to avoid this so hard, too. She knows she's wrong. She knows she's costing a friend thousands. And she seems stuck somehow, convinced that if she just ignores this, that it'll go away.
This person is far nicer than me, because if I was in her shoes, I'd start messaging this woman's friends and family, to “make sure she's okay,” but really trying to dig into why she's ghosting. And maybe even mention that she owes money here, because now this woman is left without a roommate!
But you know what? At the end of the day, this is a fresh start, and hopefully this woman and all her cute pets can find better friends who will actually show up to their shared road trips.
