The second somebody spots a cat in public, the ancient ritual of pspsps begins automatically.

The sound of pspsps somehow turns otherwise intelligent adults into people desperately trying to negotiate with tiny furry creatures hiding under couches. It does not even matter where somebody is either. Living room, parking lot, alleyway, grocery store parking lot at midnight. The second a cat appears, the pspsps automatically activates like a deeply ingrained human survival instinct.

Cats also react to pspsps in wildly different ways. Some come trotting over immediately like little whiskered angels ready for attention and snacks. Others stare for three full business days before deciding whether the invitation is worth acknowledging. Then there are the cats who hear the pspsps, make direct eye contact, and walk away on purpose just to keep everybody humble.

The whole interaction somehow always becomes a slow-motion standoff too. Somebody keeps softly going pspsps while the cat inches forward one tiny step at a time like it is approaching a highly sensitive negotiation. One little sniff usually leads to another cautious step forward, and suddenly the cat is rubbing against somebody's leg like they have known each other for years.

Pspsps really feels like one of the most universal cat summoning methods ever created. Cats may pretend they are above it, but one little ear twitch always gives them away.

The second a little neighborhood cat appears, people immediately start making tiny noises and holding out a hand hoping the cat might walk over.   • When a cat actually comes over after hearing pspsps, it seriously feels like a mission has been completed successfully. There is always that moment of suspense while the cat decides whether it is interested or not. Then suddenly the little paws start walking closer, the tail goes up, and everything feels victorious for no reason at all.   • Nothing gets a cat’s attention faster than a well-timed pspsps. The second those little noises start, at least one ear always twitches somewhere nearby. Some cats try pretending they are too cool to respond, but eventually curiosity wins and over they come. It is basically impossible for cats to resist investigating mysterious tiny sounds directed specifically at them. Pspsps really has the same effect on cats that hearing a snack bag open has on humans.
