  • How to deal with wife refusing to show monthly credit cards statements

Married for 30 years. All finances and bank accounts are joint, my and my wife's paychecks are deposited into the same account and monthly spendings are paid from it. She is the one who predominately shops for daily items
  • and pays all monthly bills. I'm dealing with money placements and investments. In general I had just a slight clue how much we spent per month, until now. Looked at bank
  • account transactions for the last three months. Not including utilities and all mandatory payments she spent 19K in three months. There was no any big purchases into household, we shop for food in Costco, Walmart or local chain
  • grocery store, no diet or staple food changes, no medical expenses. Big question is where did 6K / month went. I asked here to take a look at credit cards statements and she started about how insulting it is and invasion of her
  • personal space. Our paychecks are about the same. I told here that I am ok not to look at statements but from now on I'll start depositing my paycheck in separate account and will pay only half
  • of groceries and she is free to spend her money as she wishes. Is this right path of action? Should I press more to see card statements? . At the moment, because of radical differences in
  • political views we kinda live together, maybe till son graduates from high school in 2 years, but other than that, nothings.

  • MamaMidgePidge It is not unreasonable to be informed of your own household's expenses. I really can't imagine refusing to show my spouse a credit card bill, especially if all our finances are joint. You're both paying these bills, you should both have access to them.
  • Accomplished-Way-986 6k/month on "everything else" for a family with a high school aged child doesn't actually sound high to me, unless you live in a LCOL area. I think it probably is what your household costs to run, and you're deciding that it's a problem because you are mad at her about politics.
  • Why would you only pay for half of groceries and nothing else? Are you not responsible for your son's clothes, shoes, school fees, extracurriculars? You don't have to contribute to putting gas in the car, any recurring subscriptions, travel? That's... convenient.
  • JangaGully2424 Her debts are also your debt, so you have a right to transparency. I jist don't know how u achieve it if she is unwilling.
  • manxbean The way you deal with it is to immediately "un join" the accounts. The question isn't insulting if your money is being spent. If she doesn't want to answer the questions then she doesn't get access to your money. She can spend her own
  • Babygrrl1 She needs help. Maybe she can recoup some of the losses by selling the new with tags items online? I wouldn't give her any money anymore. Pay the bills yourself and have her pay half. She can deal with the rest. Maybe it's time to separate?? I would!!
  • Jake6624 What was your financial arrangement? 30 years and she's been free to spend as she pleased and now all of a sudden you care? I would be insulted too. If you are planning on getting divorced in 2 years anyway it's not worth the trouble but make sure you get a lawyer soon so you don't get taken to the cleaners
  • Oklron6206 Check your credit score, it will list all open accounts and the balance. She is acting suspiciously so be prepared for a large balance. Separate accounts are a good idea but remember it's still marital debt.
  • Hoarfen 1972 She is spending on something she doesn't want you to see. That is obvious. It's in your best interest to find out. Soon. Her deflecting like that is a major red flag.
  • Dependent_Disaster40 You must be making pretty good salaries if you didn't miss $19k in 3 mths! And how is this suddenly an issue after 30 years?
