20 Animals and Their Kids Proving Parenting is a Universal Expawrience

Parenting kids is hard. But parenting puppies… is apparently just as hard.

A baby can cry like a seal puppy - loud, relentless, and somehow still adorable to everyone except the person losing sleep. A toddler can throw a tantrum like a tiny octopus - all eight limbs flailing in completely different directions in the middle of an aisle on the supermarket floor. A kid can make trouble like a kid goat - climbing where they absolutely should not be, eating things that are definitely not food, and looking you right in the eye while doing it. A teenager can brood like a crow fledgling - silent, judgmental, inexplicably wearing all black, and secretly much smarter than they're letting on.

But us parents, we're fierce protectors just like a mama bear - calm, patient, and completely unbothered... right up until someone messes with our cubs, and then absolutely not. That's the parenthood experience we all share - animals and humans alike. And as some of us didn't get sleep all night long, practically turned night owls by circumstance after having a baby, we need to know that we're not alone. All the parents across the animal kingdom feel it too.

Parenthood is a spectrum, but mostly, it all comes down to us doing the “look at this thing I made. They can make their own things, like pasta necklaces.” Parents are proud, even when it's hard, even when it's difficult. Just like this one otter showing off their pup (which is a delight in itself), we just go “Look, this is a baby, and it is mine.”

As funny as it is, kangaroo moms don't really “put” their joeys (baby kangaroos) inside their pouches. The joeys are born after just about a month of pregnancy, essentially still a fetus. Hairless, completely blind, and roughly the size of a grape - they somehow intinctively climb their way to their mama's pouch. The mama kangaroo doesn't put them there, she just licks her own fur, creating a path for the joey to follow. Then, the teeny tiny baby spends anywhere between 6-10 more months in that pouch (honestly, relatable).
