I'm in a pretty rural area and my roommate and I sit out front watching the birds and stuff. Today we saw the feral cat we see sometimes running across the yard and under a pile of telephone poles at the edge of our property with something orange in her mouth... Then back with something black, then grey tabby and another orange.

So we're like cool! Kittens! Under the poles is a great little den area and we'll put out food for her. We've had mice, so feral cats would be kinda welcome honestly... Plus no mice means no rattlesnakes and that's always a good thing.

A storm was coming in, about to get heavy rain and it got cold. I decided to take the trash to the dumpster next to the pile and what do I see? Little orange man on top of the pile screaming at me. Guess he climbed up through the den to the top. Impressive at this size considering it's a pile of like 15 full telephone poles.

So roommate climbs up to grab him with the intent of sticking him back into the den for momma.... Kitten just looked up at him like "can we go now? I'm over this outside thing". He screamed until roommate picked him up then climbed up and burrowed into his hoodie. He looks maybe like 6 weeks old, pudgy and active.

The rain started hard, so in the house with us he went. His eyes were fully gooped closed so we got em cleaned and he has the sniffles too, so vet appointment already set for tomorrow and roommate is fully in love.... Kitten is in love too. This is Toby.

The rain was starting, so we couldn't just stick the poor guy back, so in the house he came. We got his eyes cleaned up, fed him a bit of kitten milk we had around and he just settled in and went to sleep, happy as can be.

Now his name is Toby and he has a vet appointment for tomorrow to get him all healthy again. He's probably 4 or 5 weeks old, pudgy and active.

I'm just kind of shaking my head at the little orange cat that was smart enough to ask for help just before the storm came down on him.
  • 11
And yes, we're keeping an eye out for the other 3 and if they pop up they'll be going to the vet too and get homed. But Toby? It was love at first sight for both him and my roommate, so I guess we have a cat now.

The last orange I had was an old man when I adopted him like 20 years ago, so I'm interested to see the trouble he'll get in once he's healthy.

It's been almost a week since finding little man screaming at us before a storm and man.... Good times.
  • 18
Vet confirmed the eye and respiratory infections, along with some ear mites. Otherwise he got a clean bill of health. She said he has all of his teeth, so he was at least 5 weeks old and good to be without momma with some extra care.
  • 19
I'm happy to say after his meds he's now almost 100%! Still gets some eye goop, but they're not all pink anymore and he's seeing and breathing just fine.

He eats like a fr king pig! We started with milk replacer in a bottle, and discovered he loved the lickable treats. By the next day he was sorting out how to lick and chew soft food and now he's almost fine with just having access to a dish.... Though he does still stick his feet into it and makes a total mess of his face with it. Oh and we just today got our first pees in the litter box so yay for not having to clean that up all the time!

He's rather active in the 3 hours a day he's awake and is getting very good at climbing and jumping and making sure he's directly under our feet at all times. We sit outside a lot in the evenings and he joins us to play in the grass. Don't panic, he never goes more than a few feet away from us and a high pitched "mew mew!" Brings him running to us, so he's already better at recall than my dogs are.

Speaking of dogs... He discovered Princess, the 100 pound one in the picture. He goes between very fascinated with her and hissing at her. She does not care that he exists unless he moves too fast. That scares her and she runs to her chair. Smaller dog still kinda wants to get the squeaker out of the cool new toy, so she's kept firmly away from him at all times.

He's not a fan of our beardie (Pizza) who gets runaround time every day... They just kind of avoid each other. I'm waiting for the day that she notices that we toss him worms while he's running around and tries to beat him to one... That should be funny.
  • 24
Absolutely no sign of momma or the siblings sadly. We're pretty sure she moved them right after he went missing, but we're keeping an eye out. It's been a week of horrible rain and storms, so I just hope they are ok somewhere.

Anyway.... Lucky little man found us because he is so the opposite of the feral life. He lives for attention and wants cuddles almost non stop. He's a pretty awesome addition to the family and we're very thankful to the CDS.
