Every Costco shopper starts with the same innocent plan. You walk in needing one or two things, maybe a rotisserie chicken and a pack of paper towels. Forty-five minutes later, you're pushing a cart filled with enough snacks to survive a minor apocalypse and wondering how your total reached three digits before you even made it halfway through the store.

Part of Costco's charm is that nobody really shops there with complete self-control. You might arrive with a carefully prepared list, but that list quickly loses its authority the moment you spot a giant box of something you didn't know existed but suddenly can't imagine living without. Resistance is admirable, but rarely successful.

Then there are the free samples. Few things have the power to transform otherwise rational adults into enthusiastic aisle wanderers quite like the possibility of complimentary food.
