Malnourished Senior Cat Gets Rescued and Brought to Shelter, Turns Out He Went Missing 12.5 Years Ago, and His Family Was in Tears When They Were Finally Reunited

After 12.5 years, you would have no hope for your lost cat to come back to you, right? Well, these cat owners had just enough hope to keep the cat's chip updated for all these years.

Having your cat run away is one of the most chilling experiences you can go through as a cat owner, especially when it comes to fully indoor cats. They're supposed to be there, chilling in their sun spot or wrapped up in their favorite blanket, and if they are suddenly not, if you suddenly legitimately cannot find them, you become terrified. Because you know that your spoiled little kitty could never survive very long out there on their own.

As the cat owners in this story explain on r/PastAndPresentPics, it's a matter of one moment before it's too late. One second, our cats are there, the other, the door is open, they slip out, and you never see them again. That's exactly what happened to them. Their kitty went missing over a decade ago. The owner, thankfully, didn't change their phone number and did keep the microchip information updated for her cat, but we don't think that they ever expected their feline to actually come back. Except he did. When he needed their help the most, he found his way back to them.

The shock that these owners must have gone through had to have been immense. We, about 10 years ago, lost our cat- for one day. She was gone for 24 hours exactly before showing back up at the house, and every single minute of those 24 hours was the worst in the world. It felt like grieving. If she hadn't come back, we don't know how we would have gone on. To go through 12.5 years like this, to lose every bit of hope that they had… well, no, not every bit, because they did continue updating their phone number. And that is how they got their kitty back.
