Expensive Scottish fold cat gets spooked by a neighbor’s dog, leaving his family searching frantically until a microchip brings him home, rescuer says: 'They’d been looking for him for over 24 hours'

Moral of the story: always microchip your cats!

Cats are finicky creatures. You can give them a purrfect plethora of warm, cushy beds, the highest quality food and treats, all the attention they could ever want (and more), and they still might try to bolt every time you open the front door. Their curiosity gets the better of them sometimes, and even though we know better, they don't. Our spoiled little cat children are not built for survival, for example, they can't even "hunt" their toy mice. We're pretty sure they have no hunting instincts at all, unless you count incessant meowing until we open a can of tuna for them as "hunting".

This is why it's impurrtant to microchip your cats, because in the case that they do pull off a Houdini-level escape from the living room, all someone has to do is find them and take them to a vet, and they should be returned to you. That's also assuming that whoever found them will do the right thing, but that's a whole other topic that we're not getting into today.

Luckily, there are still good people in the world, and one of them can be found in Reddit's r/notmycat subreddit. They rescued an expensive designer breed kitten (Scottish fold) that they found in their yard. Instead of keeping the kitten for themselves, they took him to the vet, checked for a microchip, and safely returned him to his owner. In our expurrience, the only people who don't microchip their cats are the ones who let their cats live outside. In that case, they're not really your cats, they're community strays that you help feed. Because that cat surely has other families it goes to for food and shelter - cats are not shy about requesting (demanding) help. If you truly care for your cat and want it to live a long and healthy life, make the adjustment to an indoor life, take them to the vet for shots and a microchip, and enjoy your new cuddle buddy.

Contrary to this commenter, we would advise them not to post pictures of him while looking for the owner. Anyone can claim a kitten as theirs, especially when it's an especially cute one and a “designer breed”. Like stated above, Scottish fold cats can be quite pricey. We've seen up to $4,000 for kittens with a high pedigree.
In contrast, we found a cat last year hiding underneath a car in a Target parking lot. For free. She may not have those awwdorable folded ears, but she's pretty cute, if you ask us. Adopting or rescuing is much cheaper… just saying!
