Feral cat named Jeff, who hates everything and everyone, decides it's time to retire and get adopted, picks a family where he's unconditionally loved and becomes the snuggliest cuddlebug

Cats domesticated themselves, did you know that? They did it throughout history, and yes, hilariously, they are still doing it today.

House cats and feral cats are very different. We know house cats very well. We know how lazy and silly and spoiled and simple these cats are. Feral cats are a whole other being. They are fierce, they are independent, and they can handle anything that comes their way themselves. But at the end of the day, feral cats are still cats, and every once in a while, these fierce feral cats realize that it is way more fun to be spoiled and chonky at home than it is to fight for scraps outside. And then these cats decide… it's time to adopt a human. It's time to get domesticated. 

It can happen with any cat. Even the roughest cat might decide that it's time to quit the hard life at some point. It's not up to us. We will never control when and how it happens. But if it happens to us… if we, as the people who shared Jeff's story on r/aww did, get chosen by a feral cat, then we, just like them, will see it as the privilege that it is.

    Cmdr_Morb OP Jeff is a stray who has realised I will feed practically anything that comes into our garden. Jeff likes: hissing at the person trying to feed him, squeaking in an adorably pathetic way to indicate his food bowls are empty (After finishing the hissing) and sitting in a tree just out my reach and pretending I don't exist.

    Cmdr_Morb OP Unfortunately, my girlfriend is massively allergic to cats, he probably won't be allowed in the house. She likes him from afar though. In the meantime we'll keep buying him food and trying to make him comfortable.

  • Ah, famous last words right here. People always say that no, they won't be the ones adopted by the cat. They always have reasons. They always have excuses. But at the end of the day, as any cat person knows, when a cat chooses you, nothing is going to come in its way. Jeff saw you, Jeff chose you, and Jeff does not care whatsoever if you sneeze on him every once in a while. You are still the people that he chose.

    Cmdr_Morb OP Jeff has gone from a hissing, meowing grumpy cat who just wants feeding into..... A rather pleasant young chap. He now rubs himself against my legs when I go outside, occasionally attacking my toes in a playful manner and, generally being a lovely little chap.

    Cmdr_Morb OP For anyone that remembers, Jeff was a stray who turned up a few months ago. He did nothing but hiss and keep well out of reach. As you can see, he is now living a hopefully much better life.

    Regular food and, as much love as he can cope with. He is currently sat next to me on the sofa alternating between snoozing and demanding more pets. He still won't let me pick him up and, he seems to prefer sleeping outside still.

  • Jeff is going to give love and take love in whatever way he chooses, and honestly, we think that this is a beautiful thing. You are really the purrfect family for him. An impurrfect family might have tried to pick him up and force him into it. But you know. You know him, you know what he needs, you respect him and his choices, and that is exactly why he chose you rather than anyone else. Appleause to you. You did good.
