Okay, can we talk about Hinge openers for a second? Because I have been on this app long enough to know that 90% of conversations start with either "hey," "how's your week," or some variation of "so what do you do for fun", I am sorry but I am tired. I am so tired. So when I tell you that these twenty-seven people completely ignored the script and went fully, beautifully unhinged, I mean it as the highest compliment possible. There's something almost admirable about someone who looks at a blank message box and thinks, you know what, "hey" is not going to cut it today. Today I am going to open with "God must've been in a flow state when she created you" and I am going to send it without a second thought. That kind of confidence? That's not something you can teach, that's a personality trait.

I've screenshot-shared enough Hinge conversations to know that the openers that make it to the group chat are never the safe ones. Nobody is texting their friends about "how's your week going." But "whoever does your brows needs a raise"? That gets its own thread. That gets reactions. That gets people asking for the full conversation at 11pm on a Tuesday. The wildest part is that some of these actually work. Not in spite of being completely over the top, but because of it. There's something disarming about someone who just fully commits to a bit, who decides that making you laugh from across the internet is worth the risk of looking a little ridiculous. Dating apps have made us all so cautious, so calculated, that a little genuine weirdness starts to feel like a love language.

"Let me take you out and apologize in person" is unhinged. It's also kind of genius. It assumes the date, acknowledges it might go poorly, and still shoots its shot, all in one sentence. That's efficiency. That's range. I don't know if all of these landed. I genuinely hope most of them did. But even the ones that didn't deserve some recognition for trying something other than "so, coffee or drinks?" We love to see it.
