Wife refuses to pay mortgage on a property her husband owns after he asks her to fund his sabbatical despite having 10 times her net worth

  • I've been married 7 years. My husband purchased a property prior to our marriage.
  • When I moved in, we agreed I'd take on assorted maintenance costs such as lawn/garden and pool care, utilities, streaming
  • services, housekeeping etc. All of that adds up to less than, perhaps 30% less, than the monthly mortgage payment.
  • My husband is now asking me to take over paying the mortgage as well because he wants to take a sabbatical from his job.
  • Woman sitting indoors in an armchair, looking serious and thoughtful with her hand under her chin.
  • I have no issue with him taking a sabbatical. But his net worth is 10x mine and he could easily pay the full amount of the remaining mortgage without breaking a sweat.
  • He's claiming he shouldn't have to dip into his savings to continue paying the mortgage.
  • He knows that I had student loans and other obligations that mean I have had to dig myself out of a significant hole and as a result, I'm
  • working to shore up my own retirement savings and emergency account so that I'm on solid financial footing.
  • I want to refuse to take on the mortgage too. I don't think that's fair here given that he can much more easily afford it than I can. He thinks he's been "paying my way" for years and I should take over.
  • I need outside perspective here. This has turned into a significant dispute.
  • EDIT: just to clarify, I no longer have any debt. I paid it back with earnings from my job. And I am now funding my own retirement and any personal expenses from my own earnings.
