Like a bad penny

This boyfriend showed up where he shouldn't have. God knows not every run-in is a good one, and this one was of the bad kind. Some people advise not to meddle in someone else's affairs, and there might be a point to that, but sadly, not when it comes to your closest friends. I've been in this position before, and I know it's uncomfortable, you wish matters of the relationship would stay between them, and you hope and pray they come up in conversation without being prompted by an external observer. Sadly, sometimes, they never do, and you end up having to do the honourable work of bringing them up and seeing how things unfold. To me, the key question to ask oneself when found in this position is: what would I like a friend of mine to do if he or she saw something like this?

  • This happened to me twice, and I don’t regret telling my friends what I saw on both occasions. Look, the worst thing that can happen is that you accelerate a fight that was either way coming. Well, of course, that’s not the WORST that can happen, you can also become your friend’s object of anger, but hey, what have I said about shooting the messenger? Sometimes being a good friend is about holding space for the other person’s reactions when you know hearing the truth will be better in the long run. There is no benefit to unknowingness; your friend’s bliss is based on a lie if it’s dependent on that. Also, it’s worth noticing that while you are not the protagonist of the situation, the guilt you feel is still worth doing something about.

  • She should definitely turn on the headlights and let that deer be blindsided. Hey, the friend might even find out the dinner companion was the boyfriend’s cousin, but well, she still would’ve done her honourable duty as a friend, wouldn’t she? It would be my absolute terror if a friend saw my boyfriend in that situation and never told me. I would rather go through the pain of finding out like that than to feel betrayed later by two people: a friend AND a partner. We all know it, she should buckle up, save some time to hold her friend’s hand, and go through this headfirst.
