Either that house cat is the size of a small horse, or somebody got a little carried away with the proportions. Everyone else in the painting looks perfectly normal, and then there's this absolute unit taking up half the scene. Forget a lap cat, this feline looks like it could be pulling the carriage. Renaissance artists may have played fast and loose with perspective, but this oversized kitty definitely stole the spotlight.

Move over, Girl with a Pearl Earring. This feline is ready for a spot in the museum gift shop. The pose is dramatic, the expression is wonderfully mysterious, and somehow it has all the confidence of a cat that knows it's the most important subject in the gallery. If there were a painting called Cat with a Pearl Collar, nobody would question whether it belonged hanging right beside the classics.

The artist really looked at this painting and thought, "We should probably label the cat so nobody gets confused." That's when you know things have gone a little sideways. If viewers need a helpful little "kat" pointing out the feline, the resemblance might not have been as obvious as intended. It may not be the most realistic cat ever painted, but it's definitely one of the most memorable.
