Employee gets ignored for years, quits, then gets offered everything she asked for in a counteroffer: ‘Where was this 8 months ago?’

  • This is one of my life story that happened 5 years back!! So I gave my notice after 2 years of being ignored in that same company.
  • My exit interview took a wild turn when HR pulled out a counter-offer... for exactly what I'd been asking for all year 😭

Woman standing in a modern office beside desks and chairs, wearing a white shirt and jeans.
  • I was the only marketing person there back then. Every quarter I'd send a report about Impressions rankings slipping, competitors blah blah.
  • I'd flag it FIRST!! My manager would say great insights and then we'd talk about something else.
  • For two years. At my exit interview...hr asks the usual why are you leaving? I was polite and honest.
  • Said I felt my work wasn't being taken seriously (My audacity!!!!!) and gave a few examples.
  • Like how I'd been asking for a content budget for 8 months and got nothing. HR takes a pause and came up with a counteroffer.
  • With same role... but with a content budget, with a junior hire under me, and a 30% raise!!!
  • I literally said this in my mind: Where was this 8 months ago? You know what I did?
  • Woman smiling in a modern office while holding rolled papers and a blue folder near desks and glass doors.
  • I turned it down on the spot. Walked out. The funniest part that my manager emailed me the next day saying congrats on the new role, let us know if you change your mind.
  • bro he never even acknowledged the report I sent him 6 weeks ago. They don't value you until you're leaving.
  • That's literally the only deadline that works at some companies.
  • raaustin777 Yeah, that junior hire was your replacement. Soon as they were somewhat up to speed, you were going to be out the door
  • NoSubstance5286 Never accept counter offers. If you need to threaten resignation to get a raise, you'll have to do it again soon, or they'll fire you when they can find your replacement.
  • Cardiologist-This If you were appreciated and respected, you'd have never had to look elsewhere. Counter offers seldom, if ever, work out long term.
  • Obvious-Plantain-564 I told my job for about 1.5 years that I had the workload of 2-3 ppl and was drowning. The role was global and I just couldn't be everywhere at once. Nothing ever changed so I quit to be a sham.
  • A couple months later I learned that my boss went somewhere else. She reached out and hired me back at a 50% increase in pay with a significantly reduced scope of work.
  • OH so you did recognize I was over worked and underpaid. Cool, cool.
  • Hot_Cryptographer289 As a recruiter i always advice my candidates not to accept counteroffers. Not to force them into a new role, but to help them. If they only value you after you leave it shows what company they are. Also when the company has a little of a rough patch, guess who is in the chopping block the first?
  • Saftigsjokoladekake This sounds exactly like my workplace.. I'm also the only one in marketing and I'm not being taken seriously ever. Want to leave but difficult job market in my country these days.
  • If you had accepted the counter offer there is a big chance nothing would have changed much still.
  • RussellWD Yup company did same thing to me! Had been asking for a raise and a cut of commission and the moment I'm talking to another company and mine catches wind they offer me what I want. Pred you off when it's something you were told can't happen for so long and then when the whiff of you leaving and how important you are they finally give it to you. I used their offer to make my new company match and jumped ship.
  • No-Understanding2594 It's difficult to accept a counter offer after you resign - usually the company goes on a search to replace you. You made thecright choice.
