A woman signs a document with two men looking over her shoulder
Employer threatened to fire me if I did not sign my new offer letter right away even though they gave me a **** offer. I feel sick to my stomach.
The company I have been working at is currently shrinking due to financial issues and they literally basically gave me a new offer letter which outlined that the benefits basically were getting worse and offered me a pathetic dollar raise. I let them know I didn’t agree to absorb the work of two people and get a **** raise essentially.
Nobody wants to lose their benefits. It's one of the great things about working a salaried job, and can take a lot of the burden off of your back as an individual. You may even rely on it for your general lifestyle and wellbeing. Especially if you did nothing to deserve the demotion. It might be the company's fault and not yours. You don't want to have to cover someone else's mistake. That's what this boss was asking of their employee, though, who was frustrated by the ask. It was understandable to be frustrated, and they wanted to know what others thought.

A man puts his head in his hands at his desk
I was super nice about it then proceeded to ask if I could please just take a moment to review the terms before I decided to sign. Then the boss literally tells me I either sign it right now or I am out of a job. Which is so insane to me considering that they are coercing me to sign it or take away my livelihood. I got p****d off and said, “I am gonna need a few minutes to read the fine print before I sign” like what idiot isn’t going to review a contract… I proceeded to sign because I am in such a **** situation right now dealing with needing to find housing and trying my best to make ends meet.
When you're in a tough situation financially, it's easy to be taken advantage of. You'll do anything to make ends meet, even accept less than you deserve. This can put you in a spiral, though, where it's even tougher to get out of your financial situation. That's where this employee was, and they were resentful of the people who were putting them there. They wanted to share their story with folks on the internet to see if anyone had any insight on what they should do. Keep reading to see the comments and takes on this post.
A person writes their signature on a document
My partner is currently out of a job so I signed out of panic and fear of course. To be honest I feel nothing but anger and rage after that interaction. I worked so hard to be a good employee and this sort of treatment is no different than being in an ******e relationship. I feel sick to my stomach and don’t want to show up today. I feel like I can’t leave without a job lined up due to my situation but no one deserves to be treated this way. I am basically being stepped all over. I feel like I need to take my power back.
Start looking yesterday, and resign with no notice if you get an offer.
It’s not much, but I’m with ya on this 🤝
A frustrated young businessman puts his head in his hands at his desk
They have basically zero respect for me so why should I respect them? This is absolutely valid.
Look. The company is obviously on the downhill spiral regardless. You NEED to be looking for other jobs if they're forcing this on you with the "take it or get *****" attitude.
Yes. I stayed up until 2 am speed applying to everything I could find. No way I can stay here.
Your relationship with your employer has changed. Keep record, documentation is your friend. Be ready to be walked out on any day. Start looking for another job. When you get one resign with no notice.
