Boyfriend orders extra fries after girlfriend keeps stealing half of his, then she gets offended despite eating them: 'She ate the extra fries'

Some relationship arguments aren't really about the thing they appear to be about. Besides, sharing food can be a delicate matter. Especially if we're talking about French fries.

Now we are getting serious. This boyfriend knows his girlfriend. She loves fries. And he loves fries too. But every time they go out, he kindly asks if she wants fries, and she says no. But you know what happens once the food arrives? Half of his food becomes a shared territory. Do you know someone like this? Yeah, annoying. And everyday annoyances can build up when someone keeps saying one thing and then doing another. 

So the problem might sound small, but it's definitely something that can become irritating if it happens over and over again. And if you both love fries, you clearly want to eat fries. So imagine someone refusing to order their own fries but constantly eating yours. This boyfriend did a reasonable thing: he ordered extra fries, even though his girlfriend said she didn't want them. According to their past experiences, she would most likely eat his. So I understand his choice. 

But when the food came, he pushed the extra fries toward her… Big mistake. It was a little petty; we can't deny it, but his girlfriend clearly didn't like the situation. She got offended because he assumed she was going to eat fries. The problem is that she has made him expect this because she did that every single time in the past. 

Still, there was a better way to handle it, of course. He could have just let her know that he ordered extra fries, so he could have addressed the situation of his fries being stolen every time he ordered them before. They could have had an adult conversation instead of making her feel called out in front of the server. Okay, but the girlfriend also needs to be honest with herself. It's totally fine to want fries! Just say yes to fries. Order fries without fear. And if she doesn't want them, then she should stop eating his.

You did the right thing & ordered extra & she had the utter HIDE to be angry about it, even though she gobbled them up. New rule. If she wants fries, she orders them. No more grabbing yours. Stick to it. If she gets angry, too bad because it seems she gets angry anyway, whatever you do.

  • sleepinginthebushes_ NTA. I don't know if she thinks it's cute, but it's clearly dysfunctional. She needs to be honest about what she wants and, at the bare minimum, not attack you for being realistic about the amount of food you're both ordering.
