Dog rescuer spends weeks caring for a lost pup after vague “owner’s neighbor” claims ownership, then faces the old family at the dog park months later

If you lost your dog, wouldn't you drop anything and everything to go search for him? To prove that he's yours? We would.

Your dog bolting through the front door is one of every pawrent's worst nightmares. The continuation of that nightmare is the days that follow, where you are frantically searching your neighborhood, posting on social media, calling local shelters to see if anyone turned him in, grasping at any straws you can to try and find out where your precious pup ran off to. At least, that's what we'd be doing. Best-case scenario is that someone finds them and returns them to you, but life isn't always so simple.

If you're the person who found the lost dog, there's always the fear that a fake owner might "claim" the dog even though it's not theirs. Maybe they want to sell them or just simply want a free dog, and that very well might have been the case in our story we found on a helpful Reddit community just days ago.

A rescuer found a lost doggo, and was contacted by the "owner's neighbor" to return the dog to him, but they were unable to reach the owner and didn't have accurate pictures of the dog. The rescuer offered to meet up at a shelter, then got ghosted… for weeks. At this point, the dog is considered theirs (legally), until they spend one day at the dog park and the "owners" showed up.

The dog recognized them, but they also left their dog with someone else without even contacting the rescuer for weeks. What kind of family does that?

I found a dog with a leash on it (but no nametag and, will later find it has no chip) in the street on a Sunday in February, where I successfully captured it. I proceeded to post it to a lost dogs page on Facebook. Someone commented a generic "next steps" where one thing that stood out to me/scared me was "If you give the dog to the wrong person, you can be held legally liable."

(The next day) I got a response less than 24 hours later of someone claiming to be the "owner's neighbor." (ON for short) They told me that "My friend's at work but she said I could pick her up." I grew up in the "Stranger Danger" age, so I was put on my guard at this. They told me that it was originally their dog, but

had to give them away. I insisted that the ON tell the owner to contact me, and ON responds saying that the owner is working out of state, has no signal, and will message me as soon as they get back. The ON proceeds to tell me the dog's name (which the dog doesn't respond to when I call it).

The ON says they have pictures of the dog, which I ask to see, with someone I will be meeting in them. The ON sends pictures that look similar, but none with people in them and none with the leash I found the dog in. The ON proceeds to tell me about how their child cried about losing the dog all night.

I also grew up with “stranger danger”. My parents made us learn a code word that we would have to say to make sure the person picking us up was actually sent by our parents. It's pretty smart, if you think about it. But providing pictures of your dog should be way easier than remembering a code word. 90% of our phone is pictures of our dog. We have more than enough evidence to prove the dog is ours. If you don't…. then that's just weird.

I believe that they could be the owner, and I decide to call the police (not 911) and ask what their legal advice is, and what I should do, and they told me to contact the shelter. The shelter isn't open until tomorrow.

(The next day) I call the shelter as soon as I can and they say to find the owner if possible, and hold on to the dog until I can find the owner as the shelter is double- booked. I explain that I could've found the owner, and I communicate my fear

of being sued. The shelter tells me that if I have a suspect, to have them meet at the shelter to verify ownership and avoid fees. I communicate this to the ON and ask if they can meet tomorrow and they say, "idk, I'll let you know when I'm off work."

(2 days pass) I ask if the ON still wants to meet and they say "You're making a big deal of giving me the dog, my friend [owner] will contact you next week."

(4 weeks pass) I think it's important to note that the shelter told me that if nobody claims the dog after 2 weeks, it's legally mine. I have been walking the dog 3+ miles every day, playing with it, and bought a whole bunch of items for it because I had essentially been ghosted (not including the furniture it tore up).

The ON asks what I did with the dog, and I explained that the shelter said it's mine, and that I found it a new home. Then someone else texts me asking if I have their dog, and sends the same 3 pics the ON sent, and I said no.

(3 months pass) I run into them at the dog park, where the kids are crying, the dog is happy to see them, and people were saying to give the dog back and are calling me a bad person. I refused.

To be honest, I wouldn't give them back either. If you waited more than a month casually to get your dog back, you don't really care about them. Sorry, not sorry.

hotsauceandburrito NTA - the "owner" sounds suss as heck. Even if they were the original owner of the pup, I cannot imagine giving up for months if someone had my lost dog. I'd be producing vet records, sending the millions of photos I have, etc to prove my dog is mine. I would also be calling off of work if I had to in order to pick her up.

Dogs are legally considered property so essentially the dog has become abandoned "property" at this point and yes, you're within your right to keep the dog, as the shelter verified

dinomelia Nta, everyone seems to be glossing over the fact that you offered to meet them at the shelter and they weren't all that interested in doing that and then didn't contact again for days!

Edit to add that you asked them again if they were interested in meeting and they said you'd be contacted next week and weren't. If it were my dog I wouldnt wait that long and I'd be doing whatever I can to meet with someone who had him! That's crazy.

Fun_Wing_4399 NTA. If I lost any of my animals (which are all chipped and insured), I would be in a frenzy the day they went missing, looking to prove ownership, crying, and grateful they weren't injured.

It seems like the people who "owned" the dog didn't really care that much given the timeline you set out. Give that baby a good loving home, whether it's with you or someone else. Kids cry all the time when they have irresponsible parents. That's not your problem. Some people shouldn't have pets or kids.

ZhouLon NTA No way in h I would it take me four months to get a pet back unless I was literally imprisoned.

Absolutely wild that people are trying to paint you as a thief when it would have been so easy to prove it's their dog if they had put any effort in to doing so.

Jallenrix INFO: Did the owners explain why they never reached out to you? I learned the hard way to never post a found pet on social media.

swillshop OP, you are far from an AH. (NTA) You went above and beyond in your care for the well-being of this dog. A few inconsistencies from ON's side:

1. ON first says the actual owner 'is at work' - that's very unusual phrasing if the owner is not even in town.

2. ON says the owner is out of state AND has NO signal. OK. So how is ON able to contact 'the owner,' inform them about the dog and receive any instructions from 'the owner'?

3. If the dog belongs to a neighbor, why would ON's child be crying 'all night' about not having the dog? ON's explanations are getting more and more difficult to believe and aren't consistent with how ON described things initially.

4. There's no explanation for all the delays and periods of silence, the hesitancy to meet you at the shelter, or the complete lack of any follow-up from 'the owner' who was supposedly going to be back next week.

5. ON never simply gave you 'the owner's' number so that ON didn't have to be in the middle anymore and you could have your concerns addressed directly by 'the owner'.
