After giving his new elderly neighbor a few rides shortly after she moved in, one resident found himself overwhelmed by nonstop requests for help. What started as occasional errands quickly escalated into demands for daily transportation, caregiving, and even an $800 loan. Now he's struggling to balance compassion with boundaries as the situation becomes increasingly exhausting.

We were taught to be a good neighbor and to help those in need. Now, people didn't tell us that sometimes this can turn into a full-time job. I wish we could have told this to this man, who only had good intentions with his elderly neighbors that lives next door. It all started with a simple ride to the grocery store, then a ride to a different town, and somehow we ended with a care-giving request and an $800 loan.

I'm not blaming the lady, who I'm sure is pretty lonely and reached out to the neighbor because maybe he was the only person who could help her. However, asking a stranger for a loan is a whole other game. I believe that was the drop that flooded the cup, because it turned the relationship way more awkward than it already was. And now, who can blame the man for not wanting to open the door for her? Not me for sure.

I think this type of story is great because we can learn how to set boundaries. It's great to help older people, and I hope we all have that empathetic side and are able to cooperate with them. Still, being mindful of where you set the limit is important and will improve your relationships with people, because you not only can take care of them, but also yourself.

This story is a good example of how setting boundaries from the beginning can save us so much time when dealing with entitled neighbors, like this lady. Like I said, it's one thing to help her around with things she needs, and the other is having to loan her money and be her full-time caregiver.
