If We Can Cheer Hudson Williams for Standing Up to Paparazzi, We Owe Chappell Roan an Apology

• We all know that this is not the first time people in the public eye have been troubled by a group of strangers, and definitely not the first time someone has confronted these “fans” or “photographers” about their behavior. In fact, many consider encounters like Hudson’s to be a rite of passage for famous individuals. We all have breaking points; theirs are simply easier to go viral.

  This approach represented one side of responses to the Heated Rivalry star’s confrontation with the Parisian paparazzi. Fans of the actor and many others supported Williams for standing up for himself and his privacy, and understood why he got so fed up with the situation. The other side, one that was less likely to be found, claimed that this is what fame does to people, and judged the actor for his over-the-top and ill-mannered response to something he should have gotten used to by now. 

  However, the most popular response to the confrontation expressed criticism not towards the actor, but towards the audience itself, which mere months ago chastised a different celebrity for doing something very similar… and that celebrity was none other than Chappell Roan.

• The 28-year-old singer has made many headlines regarding her public behavior and tendency to stand up to those who cross her personal boundaries. Her confrontation with red carpet photographers became a legendary tale at award shows, and the video of her filming paparazzi who “disregarded her as human” outside a restaurant in Paris went insanely viral earlier this year. Then, her latest issue was when she was heavily criticized for allegedly sending a bodyguard after an 11-year-old girl who wanted to talk to her, though the singer claimed she had nothing to do with the guard’s action.

• After every single one of these “controversies,” Roan received an avalanche of backlash, with some accusing her of being an attention seeker, difficult, and even mean to her fans. She was told again and again that being in the public eye was her decision, and that she must face the consequences without complaints. Yet, she refused to back down from her stance.

  If you were to compare the video of Roan confronting paparazzi to Williams’s, you would find that there are many similarities between the two. Both individuals were clearly upset by the disrespect of their privacy, both sternly asked the crowd to leave them alone, and both tried to remain as calm as they could. In fact, some could even argue that Hudson’s reaction was more aggressive than Chappell’s, attempting to burn photographs and cussing at the scalpels, while Chappell was simply filming them and talking sternly. Yet the differences between the responses to the two intensities couldn’t be sharper. Hudson was supported, while Chappell was heavily judged.

  Admittedly, after Chappell Roan’s incident with the 11-year-old girl went viral, I shared my thoughts on the singer and also criticized her public behavior and advocacy for privacy. I argued that Chappell’s insistence on boundaries was harming her image and making her seem too entitled. Now, watching the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Hudson’s case made me realize something uncomfortable: I would never have said the same about the actor and his reaction to the photographers. In fact, my first instinct was to show my support in the face of the outrageous behavior of strangers.

• This led to a second realization: we don't just judge celebrity behavior; we judge who is behaving that way. So, if we can celebrate Hudson for setting boundaries and standing up to people who cross them, why were we so quick to criticize Chappell for doing the same? 

  The difference isn’t in their behaviors at all; It is our expectations of them as people. Women in the public eye are expected to smile through discomfort, avoid every confrontation, and package their boundaries in a way that doesn’t, god forbid, make anyone else feel bad. Men, on the other hand, are more readily praised for being direct and assertive, and they aren’t labeled as “divas” when they insist that others respect their human rights.

  If we all genuinely believe that celebrities deserve privacy and respect, that principle shouldn’t change based on who’s asking for it. Chappell Roan, Hudson Williams, and every other celebrity deserve to be able to step outside without being followed, filmed, or asked for favors. Both should be allowed to say “enough” without one becoming a hero and the other a villain.

  Since I have never been in their shoes, and I definitely do not intend to be, the only thing I can do is work on my empathy. If I can feel it towards one person when their privacy is disrespected, I should feel it towards the other, regardless of their gender or their history. The only ones we should look at when confrontations like these happen are ourselves and the paparazzi, and we should always make sure we treat every human being with the same respect as everyone else.
