This 11-year-old girl happened to be the step-daughter of Jorginho, a famous football player, and the daughter of the actor Jude Law. The incident with Roan led the footballer to address Roan’s behavior on his socials, criticizing Roan, the security guard, and the hotel for deeply upsetting his daughter. In response to the publicity storm this caused online, the singer posted on her social media, claiming she was not responsible for the security guard’s actions and acknowledging the unfortunate situation. In response to these claims, the 11-year-old mother came forward with her version of the incident, expressing doubts that the security guard acted without Roan’s support.

We can argue all day whether it was Chappell’s fault, if the security guard acted on his own accord without consulting her, or perhaps if it was the 11-year-old’s mother who was out of line. But no one can deny that Chappell Roan tends to draw fan-related drama to herself like a moth to a flame. Her mere public existence keeps causing ripples in the delicate relationship between celebrities and their audiences, and it doesn’t seem like there is an end in sight.

Chappell Roan has been an advocate of boundaries between celebrities and their audiences since the day she became famous. However, as she is constantly criticized for her attitude towards the people who made her career successful, it is clear she is not approaching it the right way. Every time she comes forward and demands respect for her boundaries, she does so by disrespecting everyone else around her. It was only last week, at the Paris Fashion Week, that Roan was seen yelling and filming paparazzi and fans while they waited to get an autograph or a picture of her outside a restaurant. And who can forget her revolution during red carpets, where she basically educates the photographers there to stop shouting at celebrities, and act more civil while snapping shots of the who's who of the events?

One diagnosis can make sense of the singer’s behavior, and that is by officially labeling Roan as a “Karen” (a slang term to describe entitled or demanding people who tend to publicly act out in order to get their way). In my opinion, Chappell Roan is a classic case of a Karen becoming famous, and with each passing day, her entitlement grows, along with her ego.

This is definitely not the first time a celebrity, especially a singer, has acted like a proper Karen. However, in the past, it was more likely that everyone would simply excuse the behavior by saying the singer was a “diva.” A performer labeled a diva can act out or yell at her audience, because that is part of the job. However, as internet culture evolved, the public became increasingly intolerant of celebrities acting out, no matter how much one might like their craft. With social media and cancel culture, audiences are much more aware of their worth and are able to recognize celebrities for exactly who they are: people. A devoted fan is much more likely to appreciate a nice celebrity than an entitled one, no matter who they are or how famous they get.

Chappell made claims in the past that becoming famous for her music was never part of her plan. One can pursue a career in music without wanting to become famous for it. Fame is not always something someone desires, and that is completely understandable. Most performers can’t really pull a Hannah Montana on their audience and get the best of both worlds. However, since fame is a known side effect of a successful music career, why not properly prepare for it? With all due respect to Roan’s success, she is not the first singer struggling with setting boundaries and ensuring others respect her privacy, and she will definitely not be the last. If she could only learn from her predecessors’ experiences, she could stop getting canceled every other day.

Lady Gaga, for example, had her fair share of encounters with paparazzi and fans in the early years of her career. Even by just listening to the song “Paparazzi,” it was clear that she, too, struggled with finding the balance between being famous and wanting to live a normal life. Yet, in recent years, Gaga barely shows her face outside of a professional environment. She announced her desire to be more private in 2023, and since then, she has managed to keep her word and separate her personal life from her professional career. The same can be said for Adele, who disappeared for years between albums, or Zendaya, who still keeps the details of her rumored wedding a complete secret. Like them, many other public figures manage to keep their personal lives… well, personal.

One can still maintain a private life while also having a devoted audience, but that is not what Roan truly seeks. If being in the public eye bothers Roan so much, nothing is stopping her from stepping out of it for a while. However, it is becoming clear that she enjoys the attention and thrives whenever she gets to act on her entitlement, just like any other Karen. There is only so much one can do in the name of privacy, and Roan’s public confrontations, filming fans and photographers outside of restaurants, and lashing out at 11-year-olds, have crossed the line.

We can separate the art from the artist and enjoy Chappell’s music while still recognizing that she is a tough person to be around, especially if you’re her fan. If we want to help her accept the reality of her fame and encourage her to let go of the Karen attitude, we should treat her like any other Karen we come across in the wild and refuse to play a part in her entitled tantrums. Then and only then, she might learn to respect those around her without letting her fame get into her head.
