AITAH for not loaning my brother $1,000 even though he is unemployed?
For context, I, (24m) And my older brother (27M), have built a very close relationship over the years, but i have never loaned him more than $75 at once.
A few days ago, he asked for $1,000 because he had to pay off his rent. I understand that he has no current income, but there are multiple immediate hire and entry level jobs in our location that he is more than fully qualified for, but refuses to take. I feel like if i hand it over, he will use it as a mode to avoid working for even longer.
As of current standings, my family members and him are giving me a hard time for not lending him this money.
Am I the As*hole?

You're not obligated to fund his unemployment when jobs are available. Boundaries with money are healthy.
-
NTA. You’re not obligated to lend someone $1,000 especially if they’re choosing not to work and not making an effort
-
When someone asks for money to cover rent, it’s usually because he spent the rent money on something else. It also means that he would have to come up with two months rent for the next month: his rent and his debt to you for last month’s rent. He won’t have it. You’ll chase him for it and he’ll ask for another loan before his debt of repaid to you.
Boundaries are your friend. Steer him to other family members, especially those who are saying you should lent him money. -
I would just say I don't have the money. Anyone who makes a comment on it let them know your adding them to a public list of people willing to donate. Watch how fast people stop.

Since its your brother, you'll never get it back -- He'll pull the "Family helps family" card.
Let your parents or other family members loan him the money.
Tell him to move back in with mom and dad if he can't afford rent.
-
Of course everyone is looking at you as the selfish one since they don't want to help him. And I kinda have a hunch you are too honest with telling others what you earn, how much you have. Better change that. And you're not the AH cuz after another month he still won't have a job or money to pay the rent.

NTA ... ur brother is an adult and should be able to support himself. and if any of ur family has any issue with it, just tell them they can give ur brother the money themselves
-
He needs to take any job to pay his rent. If he is too proud, too bad. He will have a hard time paying you and everyone else the money he borrowed.
-
Why would you loan 1,000 to someone with no income to pay you back.
-
TBD. Can you afford it? Consider it a donation if you can. I gave my brother loads more when he was starting out and have never seen any of it 20 years in, it’s just the sunk cost of being and having a close sibling who struggles. Personally, I have never regretted it.
-
is it really a loan if you never get it back?
-
NTA - OP, never loan an amount unless you are comfortable never getting it back. If I were in your shoes I would send a group text so everyone receives the same message at the same time: "Since family helps family, someone with more disposable income than I needs to loan OB $1k because I don't have that money to loan."
-
NTA. If you can’t say no without an explanation. Just say your car broke down or for some reason your insurance didn’t pass and they send you a bill. You’re short on money and you are thinking of asking somebody for money.
-
NTA for not lending him money. If you decide he really needs it, offer to pay his rent directly so he can't just blow the cash. Still make him pay you back tho.
-
NTA. Money and family do not mix. Do not enable your brother, he is an adult and needs to learn to take care of himself.
