Would you turn down a huge cash gift from your family?

Money can be a tricky subject, even within your own family. Especially within your own family. Take it from the TV show Gilmore Girls, which is all about the fickle nature of generational wealth. The minute Lorelai allows her parents to pay for Rory's expensive education, she is thrust back into their lives. This is a privileged discussion to be having, sure, but a real one nonetheless. Money sometimes comes with strings attached. There is no such thing as a free lunch. And if you're the type of person who prefers your independence, then you're probably cautious about who you owe money to and when. You're probably careful that you don't take anything you feel like you don't deserve, and you mind your own purse strings. This is what was happening here. 

Weddings are a huge moment in a couple's life. It marks the beginning of your joint assets, at the very least. You're probably having to figure things out financially that you didn't before. And maybe you're starting to make big purchases, like a house or a car. Starting a life together can be an expensive ordeal. Hence the wedding gifts.   • Money is control to people like them, never allow them to have it. They may try and guilt you with estate planning as well, so make sure you tell them you aren't counting on their money and you hope they are able to enjoy retirement.
