‘The interview will not be happening’: Manager refuses to interview job candidate after she arrives an hour early for interview and demands to be seen immediately, she throws a tantrum in response

How early is too early?

This candidate for a retail job had an interview scheduled for 11 a.m. However, she showed up an hour earlier, and instead of going to a cafe until the time was right or waiting patiently for the arrival of the manager, she started demanding to be interviewed right away. Workers told her that wasn't possible, and when the manager finally got there, the candidate was furious, claiming they were wasting her time. Shocked by her entitlement, the manager politely told her she needed to adjust her attitude and that the interview would no longer be happening. 

Being nervous over a job interview and wanting to be on time is perfectly understandable. Looking for a job is an arduous task that oftentimes takes months and consumes our patience. Still, when the chance of an interview finally comes, it's important to remember that the interviewer also has a fixed schedule to stick to and other tasks to complete. We expect them to arrive on time for us, and we do it for them. But it's not fair to demand that they go out of their way to tend to our whims. Getting there early is alright. What is not alright is wanting the rest of the world to adapt to what we expect. 

Working in retail and dealing with people constantly is complicated. If that is the attitude this job candidate was going to show up to work with, it was wise for the manager to dismiss her. If you're acting as the face of a business and have daily contact with customers, your image must be calm and collected, especially because you might encounter plenty of complicated people along the way. You can't lose your mind over something that you consider unfair, even less if it was your mistake in the first place. Customers won't tolerate it, and you'll make yourself and the company look bad.
