Panicked owner searches everywhere for their escaped cat, mistakes a stray kitten for them, only to discover their cat was hiding at home all along, and now they have a new family member: 'Feels like they were scheming'

Every cat owner knows that moment of panic… when you suddenly can't find your cat in all of its usual hiding spots. 

All cats have strange hiding spots. You, as a cat owner, learn that sooner or later. I learned that later. I didn't know just how agile my chonky cat is when it comes to hiding. A giant fly will be sitting right next to her, begging her to catch it, and she will not move. Too lazy. But climbing inside of an open cabinet above the sink because there is a slight chance of finding a piece of bread in that cabinet, then staying there because it's comfy or something, and giving her momma a heart attack… well, that's easy for her. If that hasn't happened to you yet, it will. We promise. One day, everything will be completely normal, and then, you will find your cat behind the fridge or something. 

Sometimes, these hiding places really are impressive. Other times, our cats are hiding right under our noses. That was the case with today's panicked cat owner. One moment, everything was fine. The next moment, they couldn't find their cat. The cat, of course, didn't bother helping them. The cat let them go on panicking, sitting quietly in their hiding spot, enjoying life as usual. Meanwhile, the owner was outside looking for them and unknowingly changing their whole life. Because they did find a cat outside - a cat they thought was their cat - except it wasn't. The kitten they found was completely different, but that kitten liked the thought of being spoiled rotten for the rest of its life in a warm home, and now that the opportunity presented itself, they were not going to give up on it. And so instead of finding their own cat, this person ended up bringing a second one home.

    One night I thought my indoor cat had escaped. I went searching in the rain with treats and a flashlight. A set of eyes peered out from underneath my car. Assuming it was my "missing" cat, I walked over with the treats.

    To my surprise, it was a stray who was just trying to keep dry. He didn't run away, so I offered him a treat. After he ate the first treat, he ran up to me and asked for more. I was shocked by his friendliness. I went inside and grabbed 2 cans of cat food for him. He was so starved he nearly finished them both.

    I was heartbroken to leave him outside, but I wasn't sure whether he belonged to someone else. The following weeks I saw him daily, either in my yard or hiding in my shed.

    He would meow loudly and run to see me any time that he heard my voice. He even tried following me into the house. I decided to put a collar on him, hoping that his owner would remove it or contact me. After 3 days, with the collar still on, I took him inside.

    He received a clean bill of health from the vet and no microchip. I couldn't be happier with him. I was honestly relieved that he didn't have a microchip because I became attached to the little fella.

    He fit right in with the family and has made himself at home. I still can't believe that while searching for one cat and ended up with another. Feels like they were scheming.

    TL;DR I went looking for my indoor cat and found a stray 6 month old kitten. Turns out my indoor cat was inside the whole time. The kitten followed me around for weeks, practically demanding to be let inside. I adopted him after we couldn't find an owner.

    Alana_Piranha OP I did. He wasn't even outside. He was sleeping somewhere and I couldn't find him. I jumped the g in assuming that he got outside. Best case scenario

    Alana_Piranha OP Mercury! Named after Freddie Mercury It's fitting because Mercury is a god of travel and communication and this cat is very chatty. He's always meowing at something. Dog walks past him..meow. Wind blows the curtains..meow. Adjusting the blankets..meow. It never stops, haha. He also likes to loudly announce his presence when he enters a room.
