  • Firing someone in front of their mother... my Monday is going to go down nicely.

So I manage a team assistant. They have been with the business for almost 6 months. Note I only became her manager 2 months ago, prior to this someone else was managing her. We are coming up to the end of probation and I need to have the tough conversation with her that she is unfortunately not passing.
  • I was advised by HR to put the meeting in the diary yesterday for mid day. So I set this up at and sent out the meeting invite at 8am for mid day so she has enough time to get a support person.
  • This grown woman declined the meeting. Emails me saying "I decline the meeting as I don't want to have this conversation".
  • I then went to her and asked if we could have a quick chat. She started YELLING at me " no no no, that's not how it works" then got up and walked away and left the building even before I could say a word.
  • HR needed to get involved at this point and after about 20 minutes the employee returned to her desk and sent me another email telling me to reschedule together meeting. The head of HR then went to the employee and asked to have a chat and she started yelling at the head of HR "I've made it perfectly clear I'm not having this meeting and I don't want to talk to you".
  • Again stormed off very aggressively. We later agreed via message and email that we are happy to reschedule. another meeting to Monday but we do need to have this conversation.
  • She is bringing her mother as a support person and I think it's just the strangest thing! She is 33 years old! I'm not looking forward to this a single bit!

  • UPDATE: Meeting commenced at 9:30am What was meant to be just the employee and her mother turned out to be the mother & sister. HR immediately advised only one person can be a support person and one of her relatives need to wait in the visitors area. She opted in for her sister to stay and her mother left the room
  • but wanted to sit outside the glass door which we said absolutely not. So there we are in the room with myself, HR rep, employee who's getting terminated and her sister. They brought their personal laptop to take notes, an 8 page script with questions and a diagram of something that made no sense.
  • The sister starts speaking and hr stopped her and told her that her role is to sit there and take notes not to speak on the employees behalf that she's overstepping and she needs to be careful or we will need to stop the meeting. She then very aggressively advises us that she's overstepping will be recording the meeting on a device to which we very quickly said no, due to
  • Privacy they are not allowed to do so. (We are under the impression the secretly did anyway). We then advise the employee what the purpose of the meeting was and they confirmed they understood. I started saying my piece and the sister interjected again. And it was a relentless stop and start to remind her
  • to not advocate. The employee then referred to her 8page script and started asking for examples as to why we are at this meeting. Which we happily provided. This then turned into the employee and her sister requesting for breaks due to her being distressed and unable to collect herself or answer without her sister answering for her. We were able to prove everything and they didn't like that. It became a meeting of them
  • trying to find loopholes or proof for unfair dismal which they couldn't get. The meeting went for 3hours. The sister was terrible and the employee didn't have a clue. She could not effectively communicate on her own she had to refer to her sister every time and when we advised she couldn't talk they left the room and the sister was telling her what to say. It was embarrassing for them and she was shaking like a leaf. I hated every second of it but we
  • terminated her and we expect her to put a claim through fair work for unfair dismissal but they have no grounds on winning if they try. Mentally exhausted and relieved I no longer have to deal with her anymore.
