Cats and food have been locked in an intimate tango for about as long as anyone can remember.

No matter what we, devoted cat pawrents, try - our feline companions seem to exist in a near-permanent state of hunger. It doesn't even matter if they've just finished a full meal minutes ago - the second you start wandering anywhere near the kitchen, the meowing begins, loud, insistent, and utterly convinced that a snack is imminent. Are you actually getting them food? Doesn't matter. In your cat's mind, the answer is always yes, obviously, why else would you be walking in that direction? Cats have apparently been born foodies, remained foodies throughout every stage of life, and will, in all likelihood, stay foodies until the sun burns out. Or, you know, until you actually put food in the bowl. Whichever comes first.

Given that cats have basically claimed the throne of internet royalty, it tracks that an entire universe of memes exists purely to celebrate them, and food-obsessed cats are no exception. Turns out your cat's begging isn't always misguided. Some human foods are actually fair game. Plain cooked chicken, turkey, or fish (boneless, unseasoned) make great occasional treats. Small bits of cooked egg, a little plain rice, or a nibble of steamed carrot or pumpkin are safe too, and some cats genuinely love them.
But the "absolutely not" list is where things get serious. Onions, garlic, and chives, even in powder form, can damage a cat's red blood cells. Grapes and raisins are linked to kidney failure. Chocolate and anything with caffeine can be toxic to their hearts and nervous systems. Xylitol, a sweetener hiding in gum and peanut butter, is dangerous even in tiny amounts. And dairy? Most adult cats are lactose intolerant, so that "cats love milk" trope is mostly a myth wrapped in a stomachache.
Basically: a little plain meat, yes. Anything from the onion family or your dessert plate, absolutely not.
