When does neighborly kindness turn to neighborly exploitation?

It is undeniable that the experience of living in a place is made that much nicer when you are on good terms with your neighbors. They are more likely to want to help out when you're struggling, cut you some slack when your circumstances are less than perfect, and perhaps most importantly of all, provide you with friendship that is practically on your doorstep. It pays to develop that relationship, even if just by doing a small favor for them now and then.

At the same time, almost everybody has experienced the irritation of living close to somebody who is not very neighborly. This can manifest in multiple ways; it is more common to think about the people who make noise at unsociable hours or start petty property disputes, but they can also come in deceptively friendly packages. Some individuals see a nice enough person living in close proximity to them, and they become interested in their friendship as a tool that works for them. They want all the benefits of having a nice, trustworthy neighbor next door without having to give back to them in any significant way or be conscious of their needs.

  • A young woman had been friends with one of her neighbors for several years, and she initially felt like it was a mutually beneficial relationship. They seemed to help each other out and enjoy one another's company.

    Over time, though, things changed, and what started as a friendship became her acting as this man's unpaid personal assistant. She was constantly being asked to do various tasks for him.

    She hit her limit when he initially asked her to dog-sit for four days, then changed it to 9 days shortly before his trip. She declined to commit to this, and also rejected him when he asked for a ride to the airport. He wasn't happy, leaving her wondering if she was the one in the wrong.

  • He got mad at me and argued that it was not any hard job – it was basically feeding the dog and letting it out. I told him that no. His reaction was that I was being selfish, because I "had always helped before". I reminded him about our agreement and that he could not just change terms after we agreed. He had to hire somebody to look after his dog. When he came back, he practically did not say a word to me.

  • A few days later, he again needed my help and asked if I could take him to the airport because his ride was cancelled. I told him that I could not. He actually laughed and said, Wow. So you are done being a nice neighbor now? This comment made me mad.

  • Now I wonder if I was unreasonable, I do not think that I have any obligations towards anybody because of my previous generosity. On the other hand, I feel guilty, because I liked this person and could have established some boundaries much earlier, instead of suddenly stopping my favors.   • Delicious_Resist_351 NOR. Your reaction was just to tell him you couldn't help him the times it was inconvenient? Thats not an over reaction. You can be helpful when it's convenient for you. He is asking for too much. He assumes you were being spiteful and argumentative when it was just bad timing and a bigger ask than you're willing to do.
