Anyone who's worked in retail knows a big part of the job is answering the same questions all day long and reacting as if you've never heard the same comment before.

The cashier has almost certainly heard that same joke several times already that day. People ask where something is while standing right next to it. Customers can look at the uniform, the name tag, and the scanner before asking, "Do you work here?" Well, some questions are reasonable. I'm not saying there are not valid questions. Sure there are. But others leave you wondering how to answer without looking as puzzled as you feel. Without even realizing, you're suddenly in the middle of a dumbest-human-alive competition and your opponent is a customer.

And let's not forget that request to "check in the back." For some reason, customers picture a giant stockroom in the back packed with every missing item they didn't find on the shelves. They need to know if the exact size or color they want is hiding back there somewhere.

You know you're an experienced retail worker when you memorize produce codes and can explain why expired coupons can't be accepted. If a customer doesn't like a store policy, you no longer feel responsible for it. You know you're not to blame. You just work there and can let the world quietly explode because the store policy says so.

You're a true retail worker if, the moment your shift ends and you can picture yourself getting home early, someone walks in five minutes before closing and starts browsing like they've got all evening. Employees are cleaning up, counting registers, and exchanging the kind of looks that don't need words while the last customer compares two nearly identical products. If nothing else, retail workers around the world have a few things in common. They're all living the same stories despite living in different states or different countries.
