New manager suggests getting rid of entire department because "AI is going to do it all soon anyway": 'Why would this information be shared if not to make people anxious?'

The new manager makes his suggestion to replace the entire department with AI to the rest of the leadership team
Cuneus-Maximus Time to start suggesting loudly that the manager's job is easily replaced by Al.
HermeticOpus 1. Raise it with the union. It's entirely possible that, as you say, they're not going to do anything, but it's worth trying. 2. Start job hunting. I'm afraid that's about it. Whether the job can be done effectively by Al doesn't matter – all that - matters is whether the bosses think it can be done.

crit_boy Maybe suggest they just pay you next week for your work you will do over the next decade. It is going to happen anyway.

Only_Tip9560 I'd just start looking for a new job and move on. If ask, just say that you are aware that there have been active discussion about eliminating the roles in your department and you are jumping before being pushed.

As for the union, ask to speak to your rep and say that you are aware that there have been active discussions on eliminating roles in your department and you would like them to seek clarity and clear statement of intentions from senior leadership as to what is happening here.

pscoldfire Once you have another job lined up, just straight up leave (as long as you don't have a 2-week notice in your contract).

ArdRi6 Years ago my new boss was a recently promoted tech. She was well versed in one technology. One of the many we worked on. Anyway when she came she really tried to follow the company line. Do more with less. Trim the fat. Get rid of people. I reminded her that you get rid of techs then they won't need her. She lasted about a year before her job was cut. Her boss realized that her job could be absorbed by an already existing boss.

TalkativeTree The information would leak to get people to act and come together against the efforts of this new manager. I would share this information with my union so that we could organize against any whiff of this kind of back assward logic.

VecindadDCarlos In my case, everyone but the manager was let go

vwb2022 "Will be doing it eventually" is very different from "doing it right now". I get the concern, but I suspect that other managers are aware of the difference and this is why they ignored the idiot. If anything, there is less of a push for everything Al now that Al companies raised the costs.

Stunning-Fly-5171 The real Al question nobody has been able to answer is, how are people being replaced by Al going to afford the goods and services Al are replacing? No income, no outcome. It's not sustainable, even for the people who think they can afford it.
