Am I the bad guy for telling my niece she can't wear her princess dress to my wedding?

My niece is 6 years old. She's obsessed with princesses. She has this giant pink sparkly princess dress that she wears everywhere. Grocery store, school, family dinners. Everywhere.

I'm getting married next month. My niece is going to be the flower girl. I bought her a cute little white dress with flowers on it. She was excited when I showed her.

Last week, my sister called me. She said my niece wants to wear her princess dress to my wedding instead. She said it's her "signature" and she feels more comfortable in it.

Is it crushing her creativity to make her wear a nice dress for literally one day? She can wear whatever she wants on the other 364 days of the year, so why is this one day going to crush it?

I told my sister I really want her to wear the dress I bought. It's my wedding and I want the flower girl to match the theme. My sister said I'm crushing her creativity and she's just a kid.

She liked the white flower girl dress when the bride showed it to her, so what changed?

My niece called me and asked if she could wear her princess dress. I said no. I told her she can wear it after the ceremony. She started crying. My sister is upset with me.

Her sister is lucky that she is including her niece in her wedding at all! The least the mom can do is put a little bit of effort into convincing her daughter that wearing the dress she's supposed to wear is not the end of the world.

Now my mom is saying I should just let her wear it because she's a child and it's not that serious. AITAH?

It's not the little girl's fault that her mother is a permissive parent who bows to her every whim.

caro9lina Your sister is the problem. She should have been talking to your niece about her beautiful new dress for the wedding, how pretty she would look and how much fun she would have. And "crushing her creativity" is ridiculous. Does your sister have a grudge against you? In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter which dress your niece wears, but I think your sister was a bit thoughtless in not handling the situation better.

Do you think she will forget about it, or will she make a huge stink of it throughout the entire day?

fergie_89 Niece is 6 she will forget about it after an hour and enjoy the day. Hold firm OP NTA .nice wears flower girl dress for the ceremony and can change after - I doubt she will.

This will either work like a charm, or totally backfire, making the sister even more upset than she was before.

lostmymarbles1177 I would tell her, ok wear the pink dress but you won't be able to walk down the aisle if you do because only people wearing the right dress are allowed to.

I agree, she's too old for this kind of behavior. Kids usually grow out of stuff like this by the time they're in Kindergarten.

ichthysaur Exactly. OP doesn't have to have a flower girl. Or perhaps there is another little girl in the family who could wear the dress. Six is too old for this. I could see if she was two, maybe three. A six-year-old is old enough to understand the world doesn't revolve around her, and wear the dang dress. "Signature" indeed.

Does the mom want free professional photos of her kid in her favorite princess dress? Is that what this is all about?

lostmymarbles1177 Yes. It will be a good lesson for the kid to learn. And if she gets to the wedding and realizes that no one cares if she is the flower girl or not, and no one is bending the rules for her, then she might decide to put her dress on after all. If I were her mother and she acted like that, I would just tell her "so I guess you don't want to be the flower girl?" This honestly seems like the kid's mother wanting her in that dress. I highly doubt that kid called her aunt of her own a

Brilliant-Object-467 The sister is just exactly how parents are today. Get the child control. Let the child do whatever she wants. Don't explain anything to the child just if they start crying and whining and make sure they get what they want and this is why we today have a bunch of spoiled brats on our hands instead of kids that were raised properly. This is the time when you teach your daughter that not everything can be your way, but sometimes you have to compromise and do things to make othe

One_Eye_7080 OP Thank you. that's what I kept thinking too. I don't think my sister has a grudge she just never tells her kids no. She lets them do whatever they want and calls it "supporting their creativity." I love my niece but I also think kids need to learn that not every occasion is about them.

CraftFamiliar5243 You want your niece to wear a very pretty, special, new dress to your wedding as flower girl. Not a ratty old process dress she's been wearing 24/7 for weeks or months. That is not an unreasonable ask. If she won't wear the dress she's not a flower girl. She can wear her d in princess dress at home. Everyone else is wearing new clothes.
