Boss refuses to approve employees' overtime, yet continuesly piles work on them 10 minutes before end of day, employee decides: ‘I clock out, grab my bag, and walk’

With all due respect to the extra cash, I don't want to be at the office when it's pitch black outside.

There is a reason why most jobs are limited to 8 hours a day. Money is great, but no one wants to spend all their time solely working. Nothing at work makes me happier than seeing it's almost five and I can pack my stuff and go home. If anything lands on my desk right before then, I make it perfectly clear that it can wait until the next working day, and luckily, no one argues with me about it.

Even if I were offered overtime pay for staying later than I should, I don't think I would accept it. I have no intention of staying at work past 5 PM, taking care of issues that are definitely not as urgent as my boss makes them out to be. 

The fact that the boss below refuses to approve employees' overtime and still expects them to stay late to handle work he dumps on them at exactly 4:50 PM is what makes me feel confident in my refusal to work overtime. It's never worth it. The employee will almost always be the losing side in this deal, so it's simply better to refuse before giving in. That is the only way upper management might learn that they can't always get what they want. Luckily, the employee here is on the same page as me and refuses to be taken advantage of.

The way they stood up to their boss is pretty simple: all they did was follow the rules. If the rule clearly states that no employee can work overtime without it being pre-approved, then there is no way this employee will be working overtime. So when their boss expects them to stay late to work on documents he threw their way at 10 minutes to five, the only logical reaction is to say 'no'.
