There is a common conception about inviting someone out to eat. Whether it is a romantic date, a friendly gathering, or just a stop by to grab a bite, it is common to assume that the person inviting is the person paying. I do not think like that. I always assume, like loads of other people, that I will be in charge of paying for my food, no matter what the occasion is. And I like to insist on paying for my own food, as I would not order what I really want if it's expensive and someone else is paying. Is important to me to be able to eat whatever food I like. That's why I prefer to be in charge of my own bill. I also hate the preconception that men have to pay on the first date. I prefer to just pay for my things, and if somebody offers to cover the bill after I have eaten, it can be discussed.
That's why, in this story, I feel like there's no one truly to blame. I get the sister's husband wanting to invite everyone out and then regretting it because it was too much. It can happen. I do not approve of later complaining to someone because they ordered what they wanted to eat, especially if they didn't know previously ordering that you were going to pay. I also understand the brother's position. He went out to eat, ordered his usual, got his bill covered when he never expected it, and now he gets an angry text about it out of nowhere. I do think that the husband is in the wrong, but it can be hard to offer to do something nice and then having to regret it due to the amount of the bill being higher than expected. He should have been straight foward about him inviting so that everyone would have order accordingly to his financial availability. It was a nice gesture, but really awfully executed.
