  • Coworkers having a dispute.
  • AITAH for warning my friend about a company she was working with, only for her to accuse me of spreading rumors?

I have a friend who signed up to join an event with Company X.
  • For months leading up to it, Company X had been trending online, with a lot of people complaining that they were money-hungry and that participants weren't actually making money from their events.

  • I went back and forth on whether I should even say anything. She had been working incredibly hard preparing for this event, and I didn't want to discourage her.

  • But I also felt that if I stayed silent and things went badly, I'd feel guilty for not giving her a heads- up.

  • So I told her. I wasn't trying to tell her what to do. I simply said that there had been a lot of negative experiences being shared and that I'd personally had a bad experience with Company X before. I also knew a few friends who had similar experiences.

  • Her response caught me off guard. She became very defensive and told me she'd worked with Company X before and had never experienced anything bad.

  • Woman having a dispute with coworker.
  • Then she started talking about how it's "so sad" that people go around telling stories about other people and spreading negativity. It felt like she was lumping me in with people who gossip or spread rumors.

  • That honestly hurt because I wasn't repeating random internet drama. I was sharing my own firsthand experience and trying to look out for someone I considered a friend.

  • So I just replied, "Okay. I just thought, as your friend, I should let you know." The day after the event, she called me.

  • She told me the event was terrible and that she barely earned anything.

  • I absolutely could have said, "I told you so," but I didn't. I just listened.

  • A few days later, I told her that what bothered me wasn't that she disagreed with my warning, it was how she immediately judged my intentions and made me feel like I was someone who spreads stories about people, when I genuinely only wanted her to be careful and know what she was getting into.

  • She apologized and said that wasn't her intention. Even so, something changed for me. I realized that if trying to look out for a friend results in my character being questioned, maybe I need to step back from the friendship a little.

  • AITA for warning my friend in the first place and then distancing myself after how she reacted?

  • Sad businessman.
  • MissionAge807 NTA but I think people tend to learn better if they just go through with the lesson and experience it. You said your peace but next time you know how to move forward with certain people.

  • Existing_Fact_3962 NTA you tried to help/warn her, but she "shot the messenger". You should absolutely pull back from her, and not warn her again. She showed what type of person she is, so believe her.

  • SortSwimming5449 NTA. You're trying to look out for your friend. She's too immature to see it for what it is.

  • LoveKittycats119 NTA. You are a caring friend. Some words can't be "unheard", and your friend seems to have crossed that line. Stepping back just means you're human.

  • stickbugszz YTA mainly because your "firsthand experience" technically was online drama. She apologized when you told her how that made you feel. You are able to choose whether or not you are friends with someone, but it feels like you are overreacting to me.

  • you-did-ask LET IT GO! You're making a drama out of nothing just as you made a drama out of gossip. Your only saving grace was that you happened to be right.
